When leavin ashford earlier my power steering didn't work for about 5 minutes anyone got a clue what it can be?

I have had a lot of problems with my power steering mate. Intermitent operation and odd noises!! I thought it was the motor/pump for a while.....but thanks to the much needed waranty, Renault replaced the complete rack. All sorted now :)

Had some some funky grinding noises from my PAS but it's very intermittent and hasn't reared its head recently so I've left it be.

It'll be the motor not pump as it's electric :)

That's EXACTLY what I had mate! Really gritty and grindy lol.
Got really bad though and eventually Renault replaced the rack...Has been fine since :)

Could really feel it as well.. If you held the steering wheel right where it starts to make the noise you can feel it jumping about and grinding. Not nice at all...

Yes, I get a bit of that too, intermittent just like others have mentioned - wondered if it's air in the system or something like that.

Does it not have power steering fluid :?:

normaly if it doesnt work then it points to the coloumn as thats electric
where as if it works but is noisey/notchy rough etc then it points to the rack as thats a normal rack system which is fluid filled

Mine isnt that bad!
i reckon its in early stages!
ive had my intermediate shaft changed already!
but i think the powersteering is on its way out because when i go to pull away and then quickly turn the wheel!
like leaving the petrol pump for example!
it sometimes is stiff and feels like there is no powersteering!
then it works fine 2 seconds after!

Twingo has EPS = Electronic Power Steering ;) No fluid involved :)

it still has fluid(thin oil) in the rack ;)

otherwise it would just seize

the steering column in the car is electric and so does all the hard work instead of ur arms or a pump pumping fluid!

Makes sense but it wouldn't cause an issue of the EPS switching off...?

no if theres a notchyness or a noise then it could b the rack but unless the fluid has leaked from the rack and its w***erd and seizing then it shouldnt affect the column

if u jump in your car and hold the steering wheel left or right then start it u will find there is afew seconds of delay before the steering motor kicks in!!worst in the meganes but all electic motors from renault suffer with it!!

Haha. Renault are lying ***** then. This seems to be a fairly common fault then. Apparently they had never heard of the fault. I suspect I'm not the only one who reported it lol.

Thread revived!

I've experienced this a few times lately but its not constant, has anyone had it rectified by renault?

I think something's dry it sounds worse now but spring seems to be getting stuck then popping around

I am going to revive this thread, my power steering occasionally cuts out for a minute or so, noticed it the most when I rev the engine in neutral or go for a ride where I push it harder 4-6k rpm. It does come back after a minute or so, but it cuts out maybe 3-4 times every ride. No noises, when it works it works fine. Any ideas? Is there oil that needs to be replaced, topped up or any filter of any kind? Havent had time to look into it more. The car will be going in for service as it needs new front shocks and top mounts. Battery and alternator are all good, charging at 14.3v all the time and starts no issues even after 2 weeks of being parked.

The no power steering on revving idle is the same for me but thats it. Not sure if thats just nature of product. Other symptom i dont have. Maybe the steering rack is knackered as they like to do that.
