I did see that 5th Gear episdode.

As he said, those 0-60 figures are usually done under perfect conditions. Same as the MPG figures they give for the cars. Usually done on a rolling road with various simulated conditions, hence why on the road you never see those figures.

That site doesn't account for weather, actual drive-train losses, tyres, driver ability, suspension etc etc etc

That's probably true but how many people claim their performance figures from things on paper or web sites like that.

It's all about pub bragging to be honest, we all like to say 'My car does 0-60 in X seconds' when in reality they don't. My Megane should do 0-60 in around 6.5 seconds, which is what I'd tell someone if they asked. In reality it'd probably be 7.5.

My Twingo does 0-60 in 3.6 seconds.

Out of a plane.

Is that with or without you in it? That weight difference could make all the difference!! haha

ha!

Manufacturers 0-60 times abide by the same rules as their kerb weight - full tank of fuel, tool kit and 70kg driver allowance ;)

70kg driver? Think mine's definitely gonna be slower. haha

I think so, something like that anyway. Tank of fuel adds considerably weight as well.

The weight difference would make precisely NO difference. Acceleration due to gravity is 9.81 metres per second per second, regardless of the weight it is acting on.

Don't believe me? Then drop a pingpong ball and a house brick at the same time from the same height and check which hits the ground first...

I think he meant along a road. Which it would ;)

Ahhhh, try to teach the peasants a bit of elementary physics, and the facts get in the way of a good tale.

Story of my life really...

;)

I tend to stay away from weight loss = quicker Earth bound car arguments as some people just can't be told..... Apparently physics have two realms, one for normal folk and one for idiots

Hmmm....

Should we start a list of who goes in which?

Luckily they are not part of this forum ;)

It was a somewhat tongue in cheek comment regarding extra weight in the car and driving it off a cliff!! lol

That said, the time it would take an object to reach terminal velocity is varied by more than just gravity in real life conditions.

For example, if I in your Twingo and dropped out of a plane and someone drops a Twingo without me in at the same time. I might need to cool off so open the window. Extra drag means I don't reach terminal velocity as quick so get smashed to pieces a split second after the other Twingo! lol

So does that mean mine will be quicker cos I'm as skinny as they come?

When taking into account the exact set of circumstances It does indeed. I don't reach the 70kg driver allowance, I'm not far off but have saved a few kg's

What's 10 stone in kg? And yes I know that's bad for 5'11" but I eat and eat and eat and eat (in fact I'm always eating!) and nudda

I like to think i'm aerodynamic :p

I'm 6" 1' and 14 stone! Not so aerodynamic ;) Lol 2.2 pounds in a kilo and 14 pounds in a stone.
