So after enjoying Twingo ownership for about 2 years I thought what do I need a nice car for? I travel about 2 miles to work and occasionally ferry my missus and child around at the weekends.

So to save myself over £200 a month I think I will sell the Twingo and buy a shed as a daily and have a 106 as my track car.
The advantages over theTwingo are that there are a lot more parts available and its faster even out of the box.

This is when I got it home

Quite a bit of work needed.

Leak from carbon cannister pipe
Slow puncture on front right
Suspension is set WAY to low! Had a nasty shock taking a bump at speed- thought the car was going to do a roly poly!
Needs new brakes all round

I drove it home at 50mph apart from one occasion where I had to test the performance in 3 rd gear...blimey does this thing pull! Only has induction and scorpion exhaust as far as im aware but already a fair bit quicker than my 133 and noticeably so!

First up lose some weight

Sunroof removed.

I plan to add some aggression to the front end with a side number plate and some cooling holes also changed the black peugeot badge and got rid of bonnet lifters

Quick tidy up of cam covers (still need to find a coilpack cover)

Then started checking out the arches as they need a little bit of welding. Not a serious amount of rust though and none on boot floor.

A lot to do

Needs a new battery or alternator
I want it to be fully road legal so need a CAT
Need to investigate why the car was shaking so much under low revs on drive home
Tyre needs replacing and wheels checking as they have a lot of weights on all of them
Brakes
Dash removing and more weight loss (keeping dash though)
Roll cage
Semi slicks
Bilstein grp N suspension and brand new rear beam
Sunroof covered
Poly windows
New gear linkages

Basic plans are a wicked handling lightweight motor with 200bhp/tonne
So aiming for 160bhp and 800kg same power to weight as the newest focus rs.

Good thing its getting stripped as the colour looks a bit
poof.gif
. Is the change in colour and black slam panel hiding a shunt sometime

I found out the colour is miami pink (hint of blue in there)

I suspect it may have had a crash yes although there's no obvious signs apart from the ns wing is red underneath. The slam panel and a lot of the front end and engine bay has been painted in hammerite or something probably to keep rust at bay. Horrible stuff and I had to wire brush it all off the cam covers too.

Its nice to have a place to work on the car too and also the piece of mind I only paid £500 for the car (and £75 got given back from road tax) so if I bugger anything up it doesn't matter too much and as im no mechanic it gives me a bit of confidence to try things.

I would have liked to mod the Twingo but this is lighter and more nimble and a lot of tuning options.

thats the best way to learn mate, essentially buy a banger and get torn into it and if you break something it'll be a tenner out of the scrapyard for a new bit in the worst case scenario

At £425, I'd say you cant go too wrong for a first project... unless you find the chassis is rotten or bent

Look out for any cooling hoses that may have started to perish with age, as track use may find a weak point.

Just a small amount of rust front and rear arches bit in the engine bay but nothing serious really. Will all get sorted. Its been fun so far I've missed out a few things I've done but its been fun.

Im poor for the time being but may be interested in future. I think brakes wise I will go standard discs and mintex pads for the first few trackdays. Its going to be running standard engine for a while so they should be fine with all the weight loss.

Removed all the bodykit tonight as its a bit tatty and if I ever get it resprayed it will need doing anyway.

Carbon cannister pipe is leaking out so yeah agree with that one!

If you look closely at pics can see the floor is bent below where your bum would perch. May need a second opinion but my theory is that as its stupidly low something has hit it. Or could be someone jacking it up in the wrong places as the sill bits are a bit bent in places.

Had a quick gander at the exhaust and im not sure its a full scorpion system. Some welding has been going on and I suspect they may have done a bodge decat job by chopping out the cat.

appears to be a dead tale sign of somebody previously not knowing where to jack the car, doesn't appear anything to worry about. you should be able to repair that easily but isn't really essential i'd say. honestly don't worry too much about these little bits and bops like the dodgy exhaust and bumps aslong as she's straight and true you are laughing man, looks in good nick besides those little problems and the small rusted sections but those are easily fixed. wait till you are a few trackdays in lol and then count your bumps and scrapes

Thats the thing im a bit anal so I need to step back and tell myself its just a track car. The colour is a bit annoying but then respray costs are more so.

Looking sorry for itself last night...

Note the dent in the door is from me where I had a hissy fit a few weeks ago LOL

Next purchases will be a trolley jack as its hard work constantly using the Twingo's lol
Then a Haynes manual to help me out with my lack of mechanical knowledge.

Hopefully found a carbon cannister pipe and coilpack cover.
This is going to be one slow project!

if you really dislike the colour, and you can convince yourself that this is just a track car it could be worth your while to get a book on bodywork and get yourself a cheerfully cheap compressor and set of paint guns from the bay! it will be a great opportunity to teach yourself bodywork, white is a very easy colour to do for example and can offset itself beautifully with simple black accented parts. matt and elly on their mx5's have painted their cars themselves for track use, and although the intention was never to end up with a professional result it did turn out pretty neat :D

Good suggestion. I think im going to concentrate more on saving and getting it track ready and tidy it up afterwards. I mean the main point should be to get on track!!

Started refurbing some raptors I had...
