So an opportunity has arisen for me to live and work in Dubai.

I've always wanted to do this sort of thing and live/work abroad and I love Dubai. However now that a dream has the potentional to become a reality the decision whether to go for it has become a hell of a lot harder. I will miss my family and dog for sure.

Thoughts and ideas?

Im in France at the moment but flying back tonight. I will post and explain more when on my laptop instead of iphone

I was in the same predicament with an opportunity to move to Houston,TX. The money was slightly better but not seeing my family is big for me.

I couldn't leave my family and my dog in the end, decided that living here was best and bought my first house. As a service Sparky , i get the chance to be away alot anyway so my choice was made.

Plus your in a job where you fly around the world so get to see all these places.

To help us decide, we need to know if you'll have more or less access to public internet

You'll find that alcohol is seriously expensive over there as we all know you like your night outs :p

I'd be working for emirates doing the same as i do now, but living in dubai

In which case, why do you need to move? Can't you just fly out as required and move later on if the extra travelling is too much

if you dont have much friends to lose here and you can like see your family 1 month a year , i would go....

but then the choice is still yours and i think the payment wont be bad either ....

Do it!

It'll be the experience of a lifetime.

Family will support you if they're worth the name. The dog REALLY doesn't matter.

Free acommodation is just a bonus - put the savings towards the extra cost of the beer.

BUT - when you get there, respect the local customs as you would expect "guests" in this country to respect ours.

Good luck, mate, and ENJOY it.

I´d say do it. You´re young, the accomodation is covered by the company, and if the job is nice, you won´t end up spending much time in Dubai anyway in the end.
As far as I know for Dubai, from colleagus who have been a bit around the world over the past decade for design jobs, it´s nice for a quick holiday, go clubbing, etc, but you quickly get around it. After a few weeks living there, well it becomes a bit always the same things. Nobody in the streets because it´s way too hot, so everybody gets into the stores and restaurants, and doesn´t do much more. Rich guys rev their Lambo in the middle of the street, just because they can, and if you can afford it, most guys go have fun in the desert with some big SUVs, but that´s about it. More than half of the cities are empty in the Emirates, they focus a lot on tourism for the "after petrol" thing, but it´s too hot to go to the beach (unless you want skin cancer when turning 30...) and the other activities are quite limited after a while.

Main thing I´ve been told is that they are nice with tourists, but much less tolerant with foreigners living there.

I personally would do it for the money and the experience, for like a year or so, and then move on to the next step of your life.

When you go live there you'll see how much of hypocrits they are.

Islam my ass.. they're very unrespectful against woman, they exploit the Indians/Pakistani people that come work there and treat them almost like slaves, they have palaces build for sheiks that are basically giant brothels and have barely any respect for anything except for themselfs.

As yotah said, they're polite against toerists but if you're a foreigner living or working there, don't presume you'll get treated the same.

They're also very racsists and very protective about their own 'community'.

I know all of this because my brother used to work for Jan de Nul, one of the companies that helped building those islands.

But, the money is good and you'll get alot of experience.
