You may remember me posting a thread about applying for a certain job... well i did apply...and now as i wait for a response i have realised that; that career path is what i want to take.. If im unsuccesful this time i will apply for other companies...but i will do my best to make it happen

Does anyone else out there do a job they love/do a job they always wanted to do?

i love my job but need to find the right manufacturer/team to work with but only time will tell............

Good on you mate. Good timing too :)

I both love and have wanted to do what I do for a long time. It's taken some difficult choices, but I think it's worth it :D

I'm glad u decided to mate!! Good on u. Don't give up chasing that dream, it will work out if not this time. There are too many people that are unhappy in work and life's to short. A lot can take inspiration from u.

Trust me mate, u don't. There are too many people wanting a piece of the action and companies are taking advantage. They aren't what they are cracked up to be

Ye that's the only problem. Would want a more hands on sort of job, hardware problems, networking etc

In a way I'm in the job I wanted to have when I was starting out.

First proper IT job back when I was 19 was in a call centre supporting people who'd bought Tiny computers!! Not a great job but was a good laugh and gave me a good stepping stone.

Now I'm one of the IT guys at a law firm in the city and I have to say it's a good job to do. Get to deal with people hands on, fix pretty much 99% of the problems we get coming in. Software, hardware, networks, hardware and software upgrades etc. It is something I've wanted to do so glad I am now. Next step would be IT training and preferably IT management.

I think it's good to have an idea of what you'd like to get into and where you'd like to be.

Those are the jobs that are going mate. Front line support will always be pretty safe, the hardware sat on somones desk no matter what it is, will always go wrong, but is becoming seen as less and less skilled as people that can do this are ten a penny.

Second line, servers and switching and infrastructure etc is being targeted in most industries for cost savings, Go to the cloud as the Microsoft ad says. Just another form of out sourcing.

I have worked in this area for 7 years and I know my job is under threat, in the same way there is nothing about. I thought this was the job I always wanted, not too sure now, but it's a job I can do and do very well, pays ok so can't be all bad.

Anyway, Rob, I hope it all pans out well for you fella, if it's something you really want you will get there.

My friend offered me a trainee position in a high end data center for a big company, gave them my cv n everything but then they employed a girl with "nice booty" but she had not experience.

I got told they took her because they wanted someone with no experience because they want to teach them everything with them knowing nothing, because if you knew anything about computers you will know it is bitch work :/ pissed me off!!

Bloody nightmare ain't it. The future of my current company ain't look too bright either at the mo

Rob you know my situation more than most. Good on you though! :)

Fingers crossed for you! It seems that a lot of people are jumping ship at the moment... I've been offered work elsewhere and am currently thinking about the offer too :)

But you have to ask yourself, do you really want to be shearing them all day every day. Once in a while is okay but everyday....

That is dependent on the type of firm you are supporting though. For example, the city law firms will not trust external companies with their data. They wouldn't go for things like 'cloud' for the sake of saving money.

They would on the other hand outsource to save money on things like large service desks and remote support. But a lot of firms still want their own staff, onsite and to hand as much as possible.

As you say though, firms are taking the p!ss with IT jobs. It's shocking the salaries they offer in some roles but it doesn't help the market is quite flooded with people wanting to be in on the industry. It helps to get into a specialised type of support though. Preferrably banking or law if possible.

Definitely but That's the thing. We are dealing people financial details but for the number of times I scream "we will only end up having to buy our data back" and not get listened to is shocking. A accountant sees the raw figures and this is how it starts.

Update:

Heard back today... I've been offered an interview!:)
