Ok so helping my sister find a car for her to have as a run around at University as her accommodation from September will be a bit of a walk from the campus, plus a car will be handy for her to get to the shops etc.
She needs something that is cheap to run, in terms of insurance, tax and fuel economy.

Preferably something in VGC with FSH, but there's a budget of £1,000 for the car itself (excl tax/ins/MOT. etc). And nothing with ridiculously high mileage and ideally nothing more than 10 years old.

Can anyone suggest maybe places to look or what cars fit the bill and are good for young drivers? She used to have a Fiat Seicento but got rid of it a couple of years ago and hasn't had a car since.

So maybe something like a Renault Clio or a Nissan Micra, I had a look on ebay/Autotrader at various small cars but didn't find anything that jumped out and said "Wow". I'm not expecting to find a car in mint condition but just something thats cheap to run really with no hidden history or problems. :)

how abut a citroen saxo/ 106? could probably get one in decent condition and almost insure it for the thousand pounds :). Just got rid of a 1.4 one and it was actually great fun to drive, my partner used it to pass her driving test and it survived, must be well made little things!

107/ aygo/ c1 always quite cheap run around cars. my sis has a 107 as her uni car and she loves it running around leeds and then back and forth to london

In my experience kas were built with added rust. I put my finger through what looked like a solid panel on my friends once by accident!

And I've considered an aygo to help save, wouldn't get one for £1k though

Toyota cheaper to buy new. Pug was £1k more new for the same spec. When I asked the dealer why, no joke, he replied:

'you pay for the badge'

I nearly died laughing at him

ive spent the afternoon detailing my mates GTO, he only paid 800 quid for it, tell her to get one of them :)
