Not sure on diameter but for the love of god don't get a universal one, it WILL ruin it and sound shocking.

If you want a better sound go chop the silencers out like matt did on his old 133, that sounded amazing and didn't have a chavved up universal box on the back which looks out of place.

How did he replace them? Is it easy to do and mot passible? Just want a nice sound could live with the standard looks i guess :)

I had a length of stainless pipe cut with flared ends, chopped the boxes out and slid the pipe over, clamped in place - voila. Cost about £30 for the pipe.

From memory it's 2" pipe roughly 50-54mm but I found that my pipe varied in just one length so you'd have to get under there and measure up to be sure.

Daz has also done this now however he only removed one box as he has the RS rear box which is louder anyway.

Thanks guys is this good for passing the mot? So 50mm pipe ss with flared arches and just clamp on? Do u remember where u got the pipe from? I will do this asap :)

Shouldn't affect the MOT results but there has been a recent failure on here due to emissions so might be something to look into a bit more (mine is still MOT exempt so no advise here from me).

I got the pipe knocked up at a local exhaust specialist. You'll need 50mm pipe with the ends flared enough to cater for the thickness of the pipe (perhaps that's where I got the 54mm measurement from?). It'll be a tight fit so you may want to double check your pipe where you'll be cutting to ensure it'll slide over.

Maybe a couple of these and a section of plane tube

You will need about 40-50mm of exhaust without bends to clamp onto, so you would have to take care where to cut if your removing the front silensor box which is close to a bend

Reiterating what Neil has said above about the bends... The first box is really tricky to get right. Mine was fine for months and then popped off and ever since I've been adjusting it to ensure it doesn't fall. I've now given up and want to replace this with the standard part.

If I had the choice again I'd probably go for removing the rear box instead and leaving the silencers in. This would probably have more of an effect and would be a lot easier to fabricate. Whether you replace it with a universal box or remove it entirely though... that's the trouble. Chances are it won't sound great though to be honest...

Which is a much better option. If I had the money I would have bought it already but unfortunately the MX5 has taken all my funds again :(

For the love of god, don't use a universal box.

You can also do like Ghostz did his 133 Gordini, cut out the first box, a smaller middle box and a different backbox.

He had this costum made and welded onto his 133 and it sounds the shizzle

Think you can find a few vids of the exhaust in his progress thread: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=5619

Hey guys just popped down to Simons exhausts in East Kilbride, he quoted me £65 to sort out the 2 rear silencers on the car. It's booked in for tomorrow morning :) thanks everyone for the help, I'll try upload a video when possible. Matt ur video of ur twingo sounds awesome so I just had to copy lol

Forgot about that...

For future reference;

However this is the two center silencers not the rear box.

Yeah car will have cat and rear box and silencers cut out. Matt ur twingo sounds nice and I hope mine sounds the same lol (sorry for copying!)

No problem :)

If possible I would have the pipe welded in as it can be a pain trying to get the clamp to work on a bend.

Hmm thinking of doing this myself now, don't want it really loud as i do a lot of motorway miles, what's yours like at motorway cruising speed (70-80mph) Matt?
