You're assuming that each person asked can only back one candidate.

If they are asking all Republicans, clearly many of them would back any of the three candidates if they were selected. :idea:

But the definition of what a pie chart represents is totality. It shouldn't matter what or who or how many were asked, it should show how each of the three are supported out of 100% total.

Fair point. However if this is the case, then in truth they should not "really" be using a pie chart. Pie charts are used as a sum to a whole, rather than a gathering of multiple or unknown totals. In that case, I give you credit that this would be a charting fail rather than a maths fail.
