I am flying to Germany on Tuesday and will need to make sure I can contact back home while I'm over there. My mobile contract is with Orange and I read somewhere that I need to phone to make sure I can use my phone abroad, is anyone with Orange and had to do this? Or can anyone suggest another way of being able to keep contact to back home that won't cost me an arm and a leg?!

Any advice/help is appreciated!

Do you have an iphone/blackberry/android?

download the app whatsapp or viber

free calls and messages over wifi when you have a wifi connection

its what i use when im all over the place and saves me a fortune

hope this helps.

I use that whatsapp. Mainly as my mates use it as they are all on cheap git contracts and get bugger all text calls and data. Not a bad app,

Guessing you have a smart phone. To save a large bill for data roaming, set your connectivity to home network and wireless LAN.

A call to customer services to make sure roaming is enabled should get you connected to a network once in Germany. Probably not worth it in Germany, but , if your going to make a lot of texts/calls, weigh up getting a sim card in country whilst your there.

I'm with tmobile and had to phone them to say I was goin to Greece so they can set the phone up. Word of warnin If someone rings or texes u they charge u for receiving it. Tmobile sell phone bondels so u get so meny minutes and texes

Does this work in the UK as well, and can it also receive calls and messages in this way?

I only ask, as I don't get a good 'phone signal at home, but the broadband signal is fine.

Yep works perfectly in the UK too

and it receives calls and messages over wifi (like skype does)

You can always use skype over wifi for free too there's apps around for it too :)

thanks guys! gave Orange a phone call earlier to set up roaming and got a one off travel bundle flung in - 200 minutes free for receiving calls and lower rates when making calls back to UK so not bad! Gonna download whatsapp as a few people I know use it on the hotels wifi when they are away from home :)
