Get some lessons to master your grip and swing. After that its just practice, practice practice.

Regards of what to buy, set a budget, then get the best clubs in that budget, dont be afraid to go 2nd hand, can get some great clubs for not a lot of money.

Golf can be a great business tool, but its very very frustrating. U need to practice regular

Make sure you spend a while on a driving range before you let yourself loose on a proper course with a driver. You can lose a lot of balls if you don't.

I'd also recommend going into a proper dedicated golf shop before buying your clubs. They'll be able to give you tips on all sorts including very usefully what shafts to use. For some people having whippy composite shafts is better and easier, but for some your stronger less whippy shafts are superior

Like what's been said. Get some lessons then spend some time in a driving range. Then if you seem to be enjoying it get a set if clubs for the range a little more. Once confident with your clubs have a try on a course.
I work at a golf course and also play. I'm not very good but but getting the hang if it.
Edit: if people start laughing at you because your not tiger woods just think they were at that stage at some point.

heres the best tip. hit the ball at the hole with low amount of shots.

as said above set a budget and dont go but really think about how often you will use them all. i spent £80 on my dunlop half set from Sports Direct and at times regret it as i dont play often and costs a fair bit to play when i do.
