Hi im having a problem with my 133, i was driving about 30mph and my engine started nocking and when i rev it to about 5-6000rpm it makes a realy bad groaning sound like something in the engine is loose any ideas what this could be?

and this ONLY makes the noise at 5-6k revs? that's around the area where your variable valve timing will kick in, it does sound like your dephaser is on it's way out. don't worry it can't catastrophically fail on you, but you will have to deal with a noisy dephaser until you get it replaced and at which time you should also do the timing belt + waterpump as it will be the most cost effective time to do this benjy.

Yeah it happens around 5000rpm and upwards but I did get a rattle every now and again when driving at low revs could that still be the problem? Thanks for the reply oscar

hopefuly you understand i'm not there to see the car, but the first thing that i thought off was the dephaser (VVT switch) problem with the internal bearing. even when not activated between in the variable valve setting, the dephaser itself still turns on the belt. the noise would only be amplified further once the oil pressure builds up inside the dephaser, so that when a certain pressure is reached it switches into variable valve mode on the inlet cam which happens to come in at around 5,000 rpm upwards. how old is your twingo benjy? if still under warranty, it wouldn't be something i'd worry about it as it would be covered under engine mechanical without question. it would be best practice to do the timing belt (or as some call it on here, the cambelt) + waterpump whilst there as you need to remove the timing belt to get to the dephaser as it's driven by the timing belt

Thanks a lot oscar, its booked into renault for next thursday but i just thoughht id drop a post to see what you guys thought, its 2010 and it has guarentee till june its also going in to get the ball joints and wheel bearings sorted so if they dont pick up on the problem this time ill make sure they get it sorted before the gaurentee runs out, will the dephaser affect the performance in anyway, thanks

you'd be too embarrassed to drive it before you would get to the point where it broke down completely on you, they seem to go on forever. it's a stinker of a problem on clio 1*2's. it wouldn't affect performance, but i deffinately wouldn't encourage you to be giving it the beans. it's merely a valve timing actuator, governed by oil pressure. with oil pressure being different at different rpm's, once it hits a certain pressure or rpm .... bobs your uncle and vvt kicks in ((haha trying to keep this basic to not confuse you, nothing worse than that guy!)) but the problem is with the bearings. delphi and their shoddy parts (Y)

then again, it could be something else! but this is certainly a good pointer, tell the guys at the dealership that you suspect the dephaser. it's good that you've got warranty period left, could be a lifesaver

Yeah i get where your coming from :) thanks for the good replys and ill let the lads no at the dealership thanks a lot mate.

I'm not sure about the standard map, being exclusively off below 5k and coming on above it, as it can definitely be remapped to come on whenever and anywhere between off and 16 degrees advance.

Maybe it could account for the lower rpm noise?

Is hasnt been remapped or played about with (yet). And at the lower revs it doesnt groan its more of a knocking sound
