Right car is currently on axel stands.
Drivers side brakes on the front have been stripped and cleaned, everything's back together apart from I can't get the retaining spring back in. 3 hours and it won't go in arghhhhh

vice/mole grips.

grip the spring with the tip of the pliers, between the upper ear of the spring and the 90' bend where the end sits in the caliper.

Locate the lower end into position and hook the lower ear into place. Then, use the pliers to partly locate the upper ear and then get the upper end located. once the upper ear and end are located, push them home.

Easy to do if you know how, difficult to explain.

Took me bloody ages the first time. Not so the next. As Neil said, hard to explain. Best bet is YouTube and watch. Will make it easier to see, if like me you're more confident after watching someone else

I'll try make sense out of that when I've had 5 cup pas and some toast.

Literally took no time whatsoever stripping and cleaning the brakes for the first time and then Ive fallen at the last hurdle.

Tough little buggers those springs!

Infact, if youve got fingers stronger than mine

No chance mine are being pushed in my hand as I've found out. Using long nosed pliers didn't help.

Mole grips tomorrow then, let's see if I can work it out otherwise my sister won't be getting off the drive in her car as mine is in the way

Ive seen two different ways on YouTube, do you reassemble everything and then put the spring in, or would you put the spring in the calliper before mounting it, and then forcing the spring over the lip with a screwdriver?

Well I've got two methods to try. Time to go struggle :(

Took two of us swinging on it with mole grips. Seriously shouldn't be that hard, I've done brakes before with my dad and its never been that hard!

Lesson learned this weekend, mole grips solve all problems.

Turns out the drivers side I was struggling with last night and this morning must have been bent or deformed slightly as when it came to the passenger side just now, it took 2 minutes.

Where can I get a new calliper retaining spring from and roughly how much? When I get some new pads I'm going to replace the drivers one, be arsed with that much time and effort again!!!
