I'm not sure about you lot but do you ever look at other cars for sale and think, that's f*cking cheap????

I always keep my eyes open, mainly for other RenaultSports as they're the cars that tick my box. Even still there's so many performance cars for sale for absolutely bargain prices.

I mean for example, a MKI Clio 172 in flame red, 70k and a recent cambelt change......£1,450!

Another one, a Clio 182 just 43k on the clock for £3.950.

Looking round you can get a Civic Type-R, Focus ST, Megane 225, Impreza, Evo for not a lot of cash. It's crazy when you look at how much car you get for you money.

Also, annoyingly tempting seeing a MKI 172 for less than £1,500 as it makes me want one. Funny thing is I paid over £12k for a new Clio 172 back in 2003 from a broker but they were nearer £15k at the time.

Occasionally see things like that, but usually think something must be wrong for them to be that cheap.

Then again, I might just have missed out on a few bargains

I don't think the problem is buying a hot car. It's just the cost to insure and the cost of fuel nowadays. When I first bough my st, 20 quid was as near as damn it a full tank towards the end it was just over quarter lol.
Plus if anything goes wrong with them it's an arm and a leg to fix.

Don't get me wrong, I know for some insuring these kinds of cars isn't cheap. A 20 year old may have a few quid to buy a car but do they want to spend that price again insuring it.

That said, if you're careful and don't go for one of the bigger turbo charged cars then there's no reason why it would cost you much more than a normal car. I mean a Clio 172 will return 34mpg driving normally and they're not renowned for major problems.

Some cars like the Imprezas and Evos are in a bit more of a different league. A friend of mine had an Evo VI, which was fast as hell but the fuel was costing him way to much. Only an £8k car, far less than people have paid on here for their Twingos but 20mpg plus commuting = bad times.

Thing is looking at some of these cars, like the fast Clios, they're never going to drop much in price. I mean £1,500 for a 172. It's not really gonna drop much lower, which means you get the performance but almost no deprication. That in itself could justify the running costs. Buy a Twingo 133 new for £12k, in four years it's worth say £6k. Buy a 8 year old Clio for £3k and you might lose £1,500 in 4 years.

I wouldn't even consider running am evo or Impreza as an everyday car nowadays due to the cost of fuel.
I think for most 20 year olds a Clio 172 would stil be dear to insure. True most have taken the deprication there gonna loose. Just for me if I bought something like that I'd spend a fortune modding it. I'd rather have something new and fun.

its a pain in the ass when you have a 172 that you are thinking of selling!!

The Evo/Impreza idea as a daily car just doesn't work, well unless you do under 10 miles a day. As a main car I wouldn't fancy it. My Megane would be enough of a pain in the wallet day to day.

You take Fiesta STs and Clio 172/182s and actually they're pretty good value. Like you say for a 20 year old insurance may be high but then again I was 21 when I bought mine and it wasn't too bad. That said the Twingo 133 is a hell of a lot less to insure, that's group 8 compared to group 16 I guess.

Yeah it's a bit of a bugger although depends how much you bought it for. I lost a silly amount in the 2 years I had my 172 for. Had 15k on it when I sold it and I lost a fair bit. Hence why I vowed to hang onto my Megane a lot longer haha

I can still remember the days of being 21 having an rs turbo the good old days.
Do insurance company's still gonof grouping or do they just make a price up if the twingo is group 8 it's just as expensive as a BMW diesel twice its value ?
I think if you know someone in the trade that will help in running a hot hatch these days.

What RS did you have mate? Escort? Cool cars. :)

I think the insurers tend to go for the risk of you crashing or having it nicked rather than the price of the car. For example the Gordini, insured for £14,500 was cheaper to insure than my Lupo insured for £4k. I just did a quote on a Mazda MX5 1.8 just to see what they came in at and that was a bit higher than the Gordini.
