Is there any way I can bypass the immobiliser to my '98 twingo wind?

I have one key with the electronics broken, and my ex lost the spare key, so for the past year I have been using the code sequence to start. I have eventually got sick of doing that so I went to renault for a new key, but didn't bother when they quoted me 180 euros (which isn't far off the value of the car now!)

I asked the guy at renault if he could just disable it because I would prefer the security risk to the hassle of punching the code each time. Even though I own the car and have all the papers, he flatly refused and made me feel like I was doing something illegal, I still can't understand what the issue with that is!

I read that if I punch in my code in, then cut the 3rd wire into the immobiliser then it will forever think the key is in, but I have no idea where the immobiliser is, and which is the the 3rd wire anyway? from left or right? what color? ... and would would like some assurance before I start cutting things.

Another solution which seemed much better than my current long winded method, was to turn the key half way, then hold the cars central locking button down until the red light went solid. When I tried it, it looked very promising when the car sort of double unlocked, and then the light went solid red - but - it didn't override the immobilizer unfortunately.

So, if anyone out there has the solution, then please reply or email me.

Welcome. Bad times but I doubt if anyone here knows. Your one of a very small handfull of people with the original pre 2007 Twingos.

yes, its a long shot, but not knowing where to turn I am relying on the experience and knowledge of enthusiasts. :)

The immobiliser is all built into the cars ECU so you cant discounted it as to say. The only way will be getting a stand alone ECU that will cost you more then the keys.

Oh. Discount that then.

Replacement key from a scrapped car and get it programmed into the ECU?

The only way I know this can be fixed is at your local breakers. a clio 2 has the same sort of workings, so best thing to do would be to get a replacement key from a breakers and get it programmed to your cars ECU.

A lot of clio's have leaky roofs and suffer from dampness around the areas that involve the central locking, so I used this method to reporgram a replacement key to work with my clio:

- buy new key

- Put your key in, leave it on ignition (where the lights on the dashboard come on before your engine starts) leave it on for 10 minutes. turn the ignition off and start engine.

hope some of that was some use to you. :)

*EDIT* after you have bought a new key, swap over the metal bit that goes with your locks.. then do the method i mentioned (worked for me anyway)

Excellent replies. Thanks all.

Tommy89 your reply looks very promising. So the key would not need reprogramming? Just leave it 10 mins in the ignition and it will be reprogrammed by the car itself? Can anyone else confirm that? ('98 Twingo Wind)

It not, then would a renault dealer reprogram a scrapped cars key for me? or would I have to go somewhere else?

I live in spain so I will have to ask family in UK to try to get me one, so would just like to make sure it will be worth the effort before I start bothering people. (spanish dont do breakers like other countries)

You can't reprogram all key as 99.9% of them are all burnt to the current car via chassis number and can't be reprogrammed.

It worked for me on a 99 clio - I doubt this had the most sophisticated computer workings inside.

It might be worth getting a new key on ebay to try the method I mentioned. Not sure how I got lucky with my key, but the method I mentioned certainly worked on a 99 clio grande with central locks.
