My insurers have been charging me loads and changing my policy for no reason.

I've currently £140.82 for apparently lowering my car by <5cm, non standard alloys, rear tints, spacers and remap.

My car is completely standard. Apart from a stupid cone air filter.

Bloody Admiral. I can't even ring them up and complain because the number charges me money and I'm on pay as you go. Now can't afford a deposit for a flat for next year.

Have you declared what you've actually put on it? If so the extra stuff they have added would be fraud on their part wouldn't it?

I would call them up and kick off big time demanding they pay me the money they've taken back within 2 days and I'd make a complaint about them for making it up.

Not much else you can do except change insurers

They did it to me while i was on holiday last year, charged me £300~ for an engine change, roll cage and a few other things, told me they couldn't refund me the money so i requested they send me the money it would cost for me to put the parts they had charged me for onto my car at the time, they told me that wasn't possible and an hour later i had the £300~ back in my account haha

Call the international number for admiral.

How can they change a policy midway through? What started the process? They must have cause to believe it to do it

I dont get how this could happen? Admin error? :s

That's what I'm guessing. But I have done a quote comparison on confused.com for lowering my car just to see what the prices would be like. So maybe they contacted my insurer to tell them that?

I've only put an air filter on the car and that's declared and cost nothing to add on.

Hmm thats worrying. I have done quotes for some weird things on confused.com haha!

I'll try this if they wont send me the money back :p

It would almost be cheaper for them to send me the money for the mods apart from the alloys :/

I've done some quotes for some very strange things as well...

I think we all do. I've done quotes for some stupid cars as well but that doesn't mean I've bought an F40 yet, so I don't pay the insurance for one.

Get the facts first, the tell them you intend to approach the ombudsman if it is not satisfactorily resolved within a reasonable time frame (I personally feel for a company with their resources 1-2 working days is plenty) and your money is refunded.
Also, don't rant at the first person who answers the phone.

Call 02920 601294 and find the appropriate submenu for changes to an existing policy, and explain your understanding of the situation. Quoting dates such as when they wrote to you and any references will help. Be calm and make a structured point, it's worth making notes before you call.

Ask who the appropriate member of staff would be to resolve this, possibly explain it in more detail to them and make your intention to take it to the ombudsman known if it is resolved within your chosen time frame.

Don't launch into one to the first person who answers, as so many people do and then don't get anywhere. People are only doing their job at the end of the day and mistakes can, and do, happen.

So, on the comparison site, you have popped in your reg. number, and when it asks for 'any modifications to the car' you have added a wish list of what you want to add, just to see how it will affect the insurance?

Yeah I did. I wouldn't expect them to go to my current insurer and tell them that I've been looking for quotes for a modifications when they didn't do that the whole of the last 2 years of me driving. Seems a bit strange.

Cheers, will do :)

You have stated that the car is modified then. All of the details are circulated to all companies, and if the reg appears on their customer database, they will expect the car to have those modifications, and charge you accordingly, so that you are correctly insured.

I'll see if I can dig out an e-mail address for them tomorrow, at work.

Do yourself a favour, and next time load the vehicle from scratch, rather than using your reg number as a short-cut. ;)

I've never had any problems with it before and I've tried quotes for all Sorts of mental stuff on mine

I think it's standard practice, we all dream, we all go off and get silly quotes for things we would love to do, try to plan to do. No sane person would buy a load of mods or an expensive sports car, without getting an idea of the price of insuring such things. Insurance companies can't change a policy on that basis, which makes me believe it's either a mistake or someone has confused a current quote with a current policy.

The Post Office dropped my previously declared mods with the renewal. Fortunately I checked the policy and was going to need a mod friendly company anyway for the engine work.

All sorted now. Refunded my money but they said that I had selected the modifications on the quotation itself but I can even see on the quote I used that the no modification box is selected. Weird but it's all sorted now.

I'd give the Financial Services Ombudsman and Trading Standards a copy of all the correspondence you have with Admiral, so they can keep it on record. They won't investigate your individual complaint, but they'll be able to keep an eye on things should this happen regularly.

When Elly insured my Twingo with Admiral everything was good until a few weeks later when they decided to add modifications that were previously on the car when I insured it.

Despite them being told it had no modifications now they still assumed it did. A brief telephone call had them removed and premium increase resolved.

I guess comparison quotes or any other random data they can get their hands on will make them tweak things to increase premiums.
