Well I erased all data on the iphone4 today after I gave my old sim card back to the company I've just finished working for.
Now when it boots, I need to have a SIM card in to activate it.
Its literally as it comes brand new in the box.

The mrs was going to have this, its only 6month old.
So I've got a spanking clean mint iphone4 which she cant even put her music/apps on now.
.....and she's given her ipod away....

I have a backup on my laptop for this phone from a month ago, but I cant restore it because the phone's not activated.

Any ideas fellas.......and I dont want to have to ask for my sim card back if you know what I mean. ;)

just go get a sim only plan, i had one for my iphone 4 until i bought my new phone.
Three and 02 have some good deals, id recommend just getting a rolling one month contract, it may cost a lil more but you wont be trapped into a sim only contract for 12 or 24 months :)

Definitely want to do what Mike_Robo said and get a sim only plan. Just to clarify, is the iPhone locked to a particular network or is it sim free and not tied down to a network? I take it your mrs already has a sim card, if the network is compatible, you can cut her regular sized sim (assuming it isn't the required micro-sim needed for the iPhone 4) and get it to the micro sim size. Insert, connect to iTunes and activate. Unless you're wanting to activate the iPhone without a sim so your mrs can use it simply as an iPod and not as a phone?- you need a sim to activate (perhaps you could clarify your question)

In a nutshell, iPhones can be activated with any (micro) sim card, so long as the sim card is a network that the iPhone is compatible with.

The mrs doesnt want to use it as a phone, she likes her Blackberry, youre right Kenny, it is a standard sim but shes on Orange and the iphone4 is locked to vodafone. Just wants to use it as a ipod for music/apps.

I have a new sim only vodafone SIM upstairs that came with the BBerry before I unlocked it.

So I can cut this SIM card down Kenny??
Great thought - I may just be able to sort this out.

Funny, it was going to be in the For Sale section by the end of the night otherwise.

You can jailbreak it to activate the phone? And you can just use any old sim card in the iPhone aslong as you know how to cut it correctly. That's what I've done with mine. Been working for 1.5 years

Just use a normal pay as you go sim card and don't bother putting top up on it. That way the phone will work and you haven't got to pay for anything

Thats just what I have!!
Vodafone SIM (unopened) and scissors at the ready.

Thanks for the advice all, I'll post up how I get on.

Or if u have a iTunes account just reactivate it using that

Cant.
Wont let me connect the iphone to iTunes as its not "activated"

Unless I'm missing something?

Not possible at all to do anything with the phone through iTunes on either laptop.

So I cut down the brand new spare SIM I had for the blackberry to make it a microSIM.
It worked first time, recognised the carrier (vodafone) and knew that the SIM was inserted.

Plugged in to the mrs laptop and it asked if she wanted to restore from a previous backup of her ipod or ipad, OR setup as a new phone.

Restored from ipad.
Bish bash bosh....done

Glad u got it sorted, for future reference u need a micro sim on a compatible network inserted into the iPhone, and a computer with the latest version of iTunes installed that is also connected to the internet to activate, or you can use the setup procedure on the iPhone 4 itself (so long as it has iOS 5 installed) which has a new feature that will let you activate on the handset itself through your wifi connection.

That's what I did first time when it was a work phone kenny.
Just a pity I returned the sim card to work.

All sorted thanks to you guys. Cheers!
