Ok... more help needed..i can download the software i need if i get a certain OS version on my macbook

current on my macbook i have... Mac OS X Version 10.5.8

now i can download what i need from here: https://www.apple.com/mac/app-store/ but i have to have Mac OS X v10.6

now ive gone to software update and nothing has come up? WTF is snow leopard and am i using it currently?

10.5 is Leopard, 10.6 is Snow Leopard.

You can't upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6 through software upgrade, you need the disc (it's a new OS not an update).
