I know this forum probably isn't the right place to ask about a scenic .... But after hours of internet trailing, a trip to the local garage (a Halfords.. I wasn't expecting much) and an inspection by the neighbour I still cannot find the cause/ resolution to this problem.

I seem to remember someone on here has or used to have a scenic and thought it may be worth a go. basically the drivers door on our Scenic (2004) has 3 nasty big clicks when you open it, seems to click just before it reaches a resting point.

This hasn't bothered me before but my brother will be using it as his wedding car (in a sarcastic ironic kinda way... I know, odd ball) and I thought I would have a go at making it a bit less embarrassing when on show to my entire family.

So if any of you out there know of any possible solutions, ways to mask the noise or common issues that twingos may suffer from in this area I would be really greatful.

If you are reeeeeeealy lucky, I may include a picture of this fine motor vehicle later on in this thread (gosh I know, I am very kind!)

tommy :)

done a few of these on megane scenics so hopefully this will be the same problem. the problem is the check strap that prevents the door from over opening. some people may call it things like ''pivot bar'' ''restraining bar'', it's behind the hinge. strip it down, replace it with a new one and be sure to re grease the required parts :) jobs a good one!

Wow thankyou! no one mentioned anything like that in the garage!

What part would I be looking to buy? sorry to be dopey but where abouts would I find it in the door? There is a megane in the scrappers near me so I can go and get the parts tomorrow once I know which bit I will need :)

Ps as promised .... The beautiful vehicle itself, sporty drive, irresistible looks and so much kerb appeal! :D

although this is for a twingo (i can't seem to find the other manuals i used to have, will look for them later though for sure mate to give you a precise answer) they are usually the same approximate layouts over the entire renault range. the check strap is marked #3 in this image i created for you, undo the 2 bolts and the one on the other side and it should pop out. they can have dirt embedded in them which makes is whine and groan, but this is rare. the reason why it clicks though is due to poor lubrication, this is usually something many people overlook. including myself! you'll be better to go to a motor factors or renault directly to get a brand new one, won't cost you much and at least it's a new part!

hope it works out for you mate :) have a good new year

Thank you very much for that help! - I will take your advice and head over to Renault, Our local one is open til 12 tomorrow hopefully. I know the exact part you are referring to now, always wondered what it was for! The one in my wifes old clio wasn't even attached at one end - that would explain the wacking great big dent in the leading edge of the door now!

Hope you have a good one to!

Interesting, may take a look at mine some time. Cheers Oscar :D

I had the door creak fixed in my garage. I asked how it was possible on such a young car and they said, the longer the doors, the easier the doorstops break.
Since then, when I open my doors I make sure I stop the door and not let it fly open.

After having a look at this myself, I went to order the part from the local garage to fit it.... Only as I was waiting for the lady to fill out the order form did I realise my car was sold with 12months warranty 10 months ago (good deal!) So being a bit cheeky I asked if this would be a warranty item, she said yes!!

So I'm getting the door hinge fitted, the heater blower number 4 fixed and a health check for free - Mini win for me :D

I did have to play dumb whilst watching the mechanic open and close the door whilst scratching his head though!

hahaha, that's excellent man. well at least you've learned something, now if any car you own is making the same kind of noise you know exactly what the problem will be ! :D all sorted now is it ?

That's right! I have had one before (a clio) that I wished I knew this info for, least I know for when the other doors on the scenic go after its warranty has run out :D

It is booked in for January 6th as they had some difficulty getting the heater part (he said it might be a resistor but would just replace the whole part, whatever that is)

Odd that our older car has a warranty! It completely slipped my mind!

aye man, the heater problem will be the rheostat (resistor pack). when you turn the heating knob from 0 - 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 etc, the resistance gets less which means the heater fan blows faster. 4 is a low low resistance, 1 is a high resistance. any one of the speed settings can just pack up and die on you at any given time but for future reference it's about a 30 quid part from renault. you'd be able to identify this in the future in any car when you can feel heat radiating out but the fans aren't blowing. it's a 5-10 minute job but it's good that you're covered under warranty :D

See that makes sense when you explain it - the mechanic didn't say it like that, made it sound like a very complicated system of magical levers of pulleys!

Having been rather positive about this car I have just been out to get the mrs from work and it stinks of oil - Opened the bonnet to find oil spewed out towards the passenger side of the car. No visible pipes off, oil all over that side of the engine pooling down in on the gear box looking thing. any ideas what it may be?

Off to the garage tomorrow - don't know if it will be safe to turn it on in the morning though... I stupidly blocked the other car in the garage with It.

04 scenic aint it? from experience, we used to have a lot of scenics come in with oil leaks exactly as you described tommy. the culprate was always the thermostat gasket. the thermostat itself has one or two (model dependant) oil ways passing through it but it's part of the cooling system, it reaches a certain temperature and opens to let coolant circulate. you'd notice this by running the engine and noticing oil leaking out from just behind the engine and down onto the bell housing on the gearbox (gearbox casing basically). what you should do is top the old girl up with some oil tomorrow and let her run for 20 minutes, wait about 15 minutes for it to cool down and open the oil cap. if you notice the usual 'mayonnaise' in the oil, which is coolant getting into the oil (due to the coolant being able to sneak its way into the coolant thanks to the humped gasket) then that will be your culprate.

well i could go on but lets just say thank god for your warranty!

Oh dear - That sounds tremendously expensive if they try and get out of the warranty. I must say that is some very good knowledge you have there! I opened the oil cap today after it had been driving for about half an hour (long trip to work and the petrol station tonight) and there wasn't any mayo - but it has been off for about half an hour now, I may go annoy the neighbours and have a looksee!

No mayo just yet - but I will do as you suggest regarding topping up, running and cooloing tomorrow morning and see what happens. Just looked over the Mrs's shoulder as I boughther a cuppa - she is on the skoda citigo configurator (I think she may be wanting a new car!)

i could be wrong mate, offcourse i'm guessing blind right now but this would be the first thing i'd look at from experience of working with those cars day in day out. to be fair, if it is the problem which i believe it will be, you're looking at about 15 quid for the new thermostat (better to replace that while you're there, will come with gasket / seal) and then the labour on top of that whatever that may be but we done plenty of thermostats etc on warranty work at renault and we all know how bloody tight they are on warranty work. even if they do not agree to replace the thermostat and only do the gasket ... if you buy the thermostat yourself mate, they will fit it at no cost to yourself as they'd need to take it off anyway to do the gasket. least that way you'll have another 5-8 years of useful life out of it, whereas right now it's no doubt still the factory thermostat which could give in at any point and for peanuts i deffinately wouldn't be risking that. bad things happen when a thermostat jams.

the main thing to remember when dealing with any form of oil leak is that 9/10 it's going to be a gasket or seal of some sort :) so really nothing to worry about. so warranty wise, they'd only be really loosing out on labour so they technically don't loose money... just don't expect to see the car for a few days as they'll do the work when they are quiet so that they're not passing down paid cash jobs :D

just clicked submit and seen the skoda bit. skodas are hugely reliable, and have great finance deals !!!!!!!!

apologies for the essays btw mate haha

No! the essays are very useful! Actually makes these issues make sense - duno why garages don't explain it like this when I go in (well, my local one) That's reassuring to know it may not be totally catastrophic failure. It would be nice to be able to keep this bigger car as we are starting a family (not that the clio wouldn't be big enough, just useful to have a humungous car)

I don't mind not having the car back for a while, they usually give me a car off the trade ins section to trundle about in anyway (well, not me, the mrs) as we don't tend to use them much.... Last time we got a focus! lush :D

LC - I couldn't convince her to look at the sandero! mainly because I would be too tight to get the painted bumper model.
