I am in two minds.

I tend to use the middle lane, if I drive in the am`s I only move when I see cars coming. During the day I use the slow lane as much as possible. The problem with the slow lane is that people dont like to give way, you can indicate in good time to say I want to overtake a lorry then it is as if people step on it only to slow down next to you.

Then there is the problem of people speeding up as you try and over take.

All the others I agree, especially tail gating, but 3 points for hogging the middle lane is a bit harsh. Rather have a campaign on making drivers more "polite". Let the person overtake, then get out of the way for the next.

Then there is the angle of using motorists as a way to make money, will it ever end?

I think it boils down to this are we responsible for ourselves or is the state responsible? If its the state then they will continue adding more and more laws in the name of keeping us safe until we are forced off the road completely.

Good, lane hoggers annoy me.

If you aren't overtaking vehicles get to the left lane. You get taught when learning to only be in the right lanes overtaking, its not that hard and its about time its being introduced.

Good idea but there's no way it'll work as an easily enforceable law however it'll make people think about whether or not they're lane hogging

I agree people should get out of the way on middle lanes but 3 points?

If there wasn't a punishment people wouldn't bother, the actual fact is the majority of people on the road are arrogant and don't care about the rules and others.

Hopefully smoking while driving is banned next and enforced with a fine and points.

There may be points but like normal it's down to the officers to either issue the ticket or words of advice.

I personally think its a brilliant idea!

Agreed I think it is a brilliant idea, middle lane hoggers are the worst! Also for tail gating I think its a good idea, had a fiesta ST on my back bumper tonight on the way back from work acting like a tool.

I think it's a good idea :) I hope next they think about people not indicating and smoking in cars.

I've already been in one small accident as a passenger directly because someone was trying to light a ***

Will be interesting to see how exactly they will enforce this. I take it they will have to catch people in the act. Taking into account how rare it is to see marked police cars on the motorway I think this is abit of a con.

I always tend to see police on the motorway in the midlands, there's also alot of undercover cars which take you by surprise.

Isn't it half of the cars in the police force are unmarked or is that just a rumour?

Who knows, they're unmarked :p

Tbh I don't see what all the fuss is about. It's an annoyance. Something needs to be done. If you drive in accordance with the law, you have nothing to worry, and therefore moan, about.

Those who are saying this isn't going to work aren't seeing the point. It's not like they're going to prowl and actively chase middle lane sitters but hopefully
1) those who do it have read at least 1 article somewhere and maybe they've realised they're a hazard
And 2) the police have the power to quickly and effectively deal with those who do this should they happen to come across it.

Tbh this could of already been an offence, I'm sure driving without due car and attention, as to end up in that position you can't be paying any attention to the road or those around you. It's merely backing this up and allowing the police to sort it out there and then, rather than through the courts. A much better solution for all, and cheaper on the public purse, in theory. As I see it, removing red tape and paperwork for small offences what previously the effort to prosecute far outweighed the original offence is a good thing.

i think its a good idea, the amount of times i been driving up the m3 early in the morning no other cars and there is some guy just chugging along in the middle lane not even doing 70.

I think it's a good idea if anything as a deterrant. The only time I stick in the middle or outside lane for a duration of time is when is the middle of the night with cars in the other lanes all going roughly the speed limit just so I'm not driving behind one of them, I just think it then ruduces the chances of accidents. Then when its clear jump back to the inside.

Great idea and it's about time! i do around 6-700 motorway miles a month and see people going for 2-3 miles in the middle lane with no one around!

Thing i saw this morning was that no one wanted to be in the middle lane! Already working!
