Hi I just got a Renault Twingo 1995, and there's this nasty grinding noise every start up, Ive changed the starter twice and the noise is still there. help pls!

i wouldn't worry yac :) no doubt it will be a noisy starter motor solenoid engaging the crankshaft teeth to turn the engine as you try to start it. its metal on metal contact, do you hear it just before the engine fires up whilst turning the key to crank it? or does the noise only go away when the car has warmed up? if the noise constantly stayed with you, i'd be suspecting possible pulley bearings being noisey. the original twingo mk 1 didn't have a dephaser mark lol :p

what to do is get someone to jack it up on axel stands on the front and get them under the car and try to start it and stop, repeat a good few times so that someone can listen in closer to the starter motor. whilst under there, they will no doubt spot the problem instantly just by listening in to a certain area.

Ignition switch sticking on the start contacts instead of springing back round to the run position. Just a thought as you say you have changed the starter twice and it still sounds like the starter is staying engaged, which would be weird for three units to be affected if that's the case.

^^^^ with what neil said, that could be a possible cause and when i think on it, it could be the cause! how mechanically confident are you? you'll need to remove the starter motor and hook it up to a battery whilst in a vice preferably to check that the starter motor is working as it should (you should be able to find out how to do this online).

this should be a handy help for you :)

THANKS A LOT TO ALL.
Sorry it took a while to get back here, but it was difficult getting the exact dephasser for my car, but after 3 days I got it. Got it fixed and worked like a charm.
