Have a look at this^^^

Easy things to check are
battery terminals and mega/midi fuses on the battery terminal are all tight
Remove the crank position sensor and clean the metal filings from it it its covered in them. Which has previously had a working/not working fail.

Things like coils/plugs tend to give issues before packing in, but not unheard of.

Other than that, work down the list

if you're getting cold crank with no start scenarios :
1 - take some wooden or insulated tongs / pliers and take the HT lead off at the spark plug end with it still connected to the ignition coil pack and remove the spark plug in cylinder 1.
2 - reconnect it to the spark plug and hold the spark plug in the insulated tongs (to ensure you don't get 80,000 volts through your knuckles) and hold the tip of the spark plug over the cylinder head (put an old spark plug into the spark plug hole so that petrol can't leak out and go BANG!)
3 - get a friend to try starting the car, are you getting spark?
4 - if not, take the ignition coil pack off (after you have disconnected the battery after checking the spark plug) and check it's resistance. if you get a very high reading then it's done for. you'll probably get an infinite reading which will be ''1'' the number one.

this is how to test for spark. if all the cylinder aren't getting spark : ignition coil is gone

be sure to check the amperage of your battery. don't always go by the voltage reading! as neil says you may have a bad earth somewhere (known as a parasitic drain) where your batterys being sucked slowly empty

thanks for all the pointers, it turned out to be the fuel pump, only done 32k.
Best place to get a new one?

dave, your best bet will be ebay. don't bother your backside with ''oem renault''. it's a bosch fuel pump i believe, that's not exactly renault is it? in which case, your best bet will be to browse around google (find the part number for it from a parts website) and look for your cheapest price :) going to renault for the exact same thing will only incur a premium for them to brandish the very same fuel pump in a little cheap renault box and charge you almost twice as much for the privilege!

Cheers for that Oscar, Renault wanted £201, got a brand new Bosch item on order, 3 to 5 days from France £112. Not sure if i need a specialist tool to unlock the nut accessing the fuel tank?
