hello!

My twingo just went in for a 36k service, they (renault garage) quoted me £270 for the service which I decided to get done as they were the only place that would give me a hire car which i need for my daily commute.

however, they have just rang me and said it needs front discs and pads for £281 (extra), when asked if that was all it needs he replied "so far" ..... jeeees! I wonder how much stuff they will uncover seen as i'm allready £551 down.

Just realised... my lovely saxo 1.4i that i had to get rid of cost £550 GRRR

Rant over, have a nice day everyone :)

Do you not know the condition of the discs and pads already?

I wouldn't just pay a garage cos they said it needs doing personally!

Dont get them to supply the brakes as they'll be ripping you off.

Buy them from Karl and get them to fit them. Madness to allow main dealers to rape folk like this.

I would ask if the discs and pads are needed, or will just need doing before the next service. Brakes are a big money earner for garages, and they currently have a bad habit of changing them when half worn "just so you don't need to pop back between services sir"

Easy to do yourself as well.

i would be very wary. vw told my dad to replace his brake discs and that was 18 months ago, and my mate had a look at them and he said my dad still got 10k at least out of them. so god knows what condition the discs were in 18 months ago

Well I was quite mean to my twingo, I knew they needed doing but didnt have any time to get it in to the garage. I had them checked by a mate and he said they were past it. the grinding noise on the way to get them checked made me worry a bit, but due to some unforseen family problems a lot of my money and time had to go elsewhere, so the car was the least of my worries.

reckon I could get them to not fit them and just take it elsewhere? or would they have got my brakes off by now? :S

On top of this i have just been informed that "we will fix the number plate free of charge" .......... i asked what was wrong with the plate to hear "the front number plate has a large crack down the middle"......

It definitely didnt when i dropped the bloody thing off. I'm going to go and pick it up before they do anything else to it.

With brake pads & disks I always make sure to note the mm used/remaining at each service interval so I know how much I have left and as such how much I've used. That way when the garage say you need to change them as they'll be done soon - you can look at how much you've got left and work out how long it will actually last you.

That said, when they need changing I don't mess about. Brakes = important ;)

That sounds a little odd. Worth giving your car a good check over before you pick it up. Which garage you taken it to?

very true, I will make my way up there in this lovely hire car (hyundai I10) and see whats going on with it.
I left it parked on their "for sale" gravely bit so im guessing its been bumped into by someone moving one to buy, I will be checking the whole car before i sign for it or pay a penny.

It is at renault telford, but I have used them before and they were fantastic, cant fault the staff there at all as they are always extremely friendly and cant do enough to help. Im hoping its just an honest mistake about the number plate.

I would be very tempted, but I dont trust my abilities with something as important as the brakes/ suspension. My partner uses it on a regular basis and I wouldn't let her go out in a car that I didn't think was safe. this is the reason for it going in today as they are the only ones to fit me in at short notice.

dont get me wrong, I completely agree with saving money if you are good enough to do these jobs :)

Get the bits and take it to a small garage. My mate who has a garage charges £50 to fit pads and discs and he changed the brake fluid if u request it

See, i knew i should have done that :S I have a garage that I use for the other cars weve had, but with the twingo I got confused with the warranty and really needed a hire car today.
Phoned the garage to stop the work (brakes) but there is no answer, cant get away from here for a while now. looks like its just going to be a tight month :)

Brake pads and discs aren't covered under warranty so u can have them done anywhere

ah, dam :(

consider me embarrassed :? lol
Don't worry mate we all make mistakes u just learn from them

i will do :) mind you, this is the last new car il have for a long time due to trying to get onto the housing ladder (buying) so any spare money goes into that from now on.

this £550 quid stings a bit.

nope, bog standard basic extreme, got a break down of what its had done - full large service (all filters and fluids 270). all round brakes front discs, front pads, rear pads (knew it needed those as i had been told about these by my mechanic, my mum borrowed the car and drove it with the handbrake on)

on a side note- did you know there is an alarm if you drive with the handbrake on!?! my mum came back and told me my stereo was making a noise due to that noise lol.

few other things needed doing from when it had a nock, almost got sideswiped on a round about, mounted the opposing kerb which knackered the trackrod end on the passenger side, independently inspected, advised to get renault to do it.

I'm aware this is over priced/ a silly thing to do/ thick..... but as I said, the last thing on my mind recently has been the twingo, i need it safe and reliable quickly - it is a tool to enable me to perform my recent family stuff :(
