You need a thing called money to do that and I have none :p
I did debate wether to ask or not, as I'm aware many of you are half my age :? I know that I was skint at a similar time... Although it doesn't need to be playing with thousands or millions of pounds anymore as internet trade prices are a fraction of what you used to be charged and most banks do share accounts. Also, theres so much more info avaliable that the small investor has some good opportunities. Hence the question

I have shares in the co I work for and I've my eye on buying some others but just need some spare cash....

My Dad invests all of his money and has made a sizeable chunk from it.

Id love to follow in his footsteps but I don't have a clue where to begin. I also don't like the idea of putting a large sum of cash somewhere where you can't really touch it and have the possibility of losing it.

I suppose that's the aim of the game though... You need money to make money and everything in life is a gamble so just go with it - you only live once!

I had my first dabble way back around 1996 with 1K in a small oil explorer (Dana Petroleum DNX) which was 10p. I sold at 13p couple of years later as I needed the money for a deposit... The same company was taken over last year but reached £23+ per share and floated between £12 and £20 for the past few years.... Oportunity missed or what!

A friend bought some on the same tip, but bought the wrong one (Dragon Oil) at 2p :? He still holds and there currently £5

I've made a few losses, some of them total losses. Marconi and British Biofuels where the companies liqidated, so there is certainly risk involved. Theres oportunities for nice gains if your timing is good but mine was crap for a while.

Getting into the Falklands exploration before the drilling was a change as my timing was OK with Rockhopper, who found oil. I doubt I'll ever be a millionaire but my amature effort is outperforming the muppet thats managing my so called investment fund.

Currency trading is a completely different ball game and financial suicide if you don't know what your doing.
A friend of a friend was doing ok at this and a few of us clubbed together, with him taking a percentage of the profit. Over the course of a couple of years, he had turned 1K into 10 with relatively safe trades... Then one morning, the Manhattan sky line changed and the currency market dropped off the charts, leaving the pot completely empty once all the trades had closed out. He had a lot of his personal money in besides and that hurt him a lot.

yer it does alter very quickly.

my parents had a lot of investemnt in companies in japan and then when the tsunami hit they droped a huge amount

I (as a Diageo Employee) have a fair amount of shares :)

Shares when I started 3 1/2 Years ago - £9ish
Shares now - £14.60 odd

Various saving schemes with Sharesave (buy at reduced price and sell at full price), as well as the Freeshares we may get depending on how well the company's doing.

All n all, it's a damn good company to invest in.

i do a sharesave scheme at work, have loads of shares, we get shares given to us for years of service land stuff like that, also have them worked into our bonus scheme

dont your company offer any share scheme? probably the best way to start because they manage everything for u
