I really must try harder. Have had the car 9 months now. The Mrs has had hers for just over 10 months now and has managed about 5k as she uses it to get to work and drives to see her family who are about 120 miles away.

Admittedly, I did take the Gordini down to Eastbourne on Tuesday. Weather was nice and I'm sure the A22 was built to flatter RS Twingos! (Even at less than 4k rpm the whole way :lol: )

I should be taking it for a nice drive next weekend too so hopefully will hit the run in mileage. Then I can start upping the revs as it approaches the 1k mark.

I know they say modern engines are run in but I like to stay on the side of caution. Did the same with my Megane 225 as well. I like to be sympathetic on my cars.

Mr Ben - how long you had yours mate?
 
3 months, just had a brand new engine installed after the stupid gypsies put diesel thrust washers in my 133 :roll:
 
Mines 2.5 years old and after tomorrow would of done 41k, I'd say that's run in?

No pushing it for u tomorrow then mr ben, nice leisurely drive down
 
Theres two schools of thought with running in

1. Run in, keeping the revs low to begin with and gradualy increase the revs untill max revs at around 1000miles or so. Said to increase overall engine life as things bed in gradualy

2. Use all the revs from new, paying attention to warming up the engine to full operating temp before using the rev range to the max. Normaly gives slightly better power output as the piston rings bed in better. Though the engine life may be slightly less.

with 1400 miles on the clock in only 3 weeks, I went for somewhere inbetween the two, keeping below 6K untill recently but driving reasonably normal

Blimey! I don't know what a 'diesel thrust washer' is but it's clearly not good for an engine! :(

Those the ways I've often heard people go with running an engine in. Like I say, I'm with the 1st school of though where I'm sympathetic to the car. Have read numerous arguments for the 2nd way of running in though.

Stupid thing is, that with the amount of driving I do the longevity of the engine isn't so much the issue as they'll never hit the kind of mileage where it would make a difference haha.

It seems as though nobody can give a definitive answer to whether one or two works best. I went for the latter and it's been fine so far! That's what warranty is for afterall!
 
i was under the impression that you had to build the revs up as the mileage gets higher from 500 onwards.

keep it below 3k revs until 500
then 4k until 600
then 5k until 700
and so on

i got mine when 2.5k was on the clock so i didnt need to worry about that and a girl had it before me so i doubt its necks been rung
 
agree, modern cars, or more precisely engines are run in already in factory... Although if going with the second option of running in, i would personnaly go for the first oil change sooner then standard interval
 
Keeping it below 3,000rpm for that long would be so hard to do.

I usually stay below that while the engine is cold, then max I go to is 3,500rpm. After I hit 600 miles I'll start creeping the revs up until I'll then drive normally after 1k.

In reality though, most engines will probably survive ok-ish being driven normally from cold with no running in period. It makes me cringe thinking I'd do it with my cars but a majority of the population probably have no idea about it.

In fact I'd bet 90% of the population have no knowledge of even letting an engine warm up before driving hard.
 
We had a customer with a Clio 197 when they was Brand come in one its second day. customer ragged it from cold when it came to us on a recovery tuck as the car wouldnt start. He had put a hole in the head or the block cant remember what one out the 2
 
It's just common sense to not rev the nuts off an engine that's just started. Perhaps if your 17 and don't have clue and are still learning.

At least in higher performing cars, driving below 3k for 15-20 minutes while it warms up is adequate to keep up with normal traffic though.
 
I drove about like some random fool to put 600 on mine

i used to go put a sign in the back of some of my cars saying "running in please pass" :oops:

this is gona sound really sad but when my best mate and i both rebuild our engines we drove to goodwood and back every evening!
his gf was living there at the time and there are some amazing roads there and back.
it worked out as 62miles and we soon racked up the miles with some brilliant driving!
thats how i found out about the breaky club as some weekends there would b supercars everywhere!!

i was alway told to run an engine in but a lot of people we build engines for completely ignore anything we say about running in!
even blokes in the workshop that build engines go by the theory that if it runs then drive it however!and that engines lose power as they get older/higher mileage so are at there best from new
just make sure its warmed up and off they go :?

My granddad used to own his own car garage and my dad worked there when he was a lad... they both go by the mentality... drive the car from day 1 as you would any other day of it's life...and they say they have never had problems with their engines (they both drive with ....passion.. shall we say) so they dont run them in at all
