Couple of weeks ago I was looking up the number from my Renault garage and I stumbled upon their second hand cars they offer.

And I couldn't resist the offer.

They put the car on hold for me and I have until tomorrow to decide if I'll take it or not.

Its from November 2009, 21000 km (which is nothing considering its a 2.0 diesel 150 bhp)

It has more options than my car (Xenon Lights, leather seats, parking aid, etc.. )

They take over my car and transfer my loan to this car, I only have a small amount of cash to equal the difference between the cars.

I'm talking about this:

I know I've done some mods to my car but I can recover everything except for the exhaust pipe. I can probaly even re-use all the LED's.

Few things why this car is because, the price they're asking is rediculous low for this kind of car, they still offer 1 year warranty, it has a bigger booth, it's a 2 + 2, its a coupé and when I went to visit my brother in the UK I refueled 3 times in 5 days and I'm planing on going more but with the train ticket and fuel combined, its cheaper to take the airplane :?

I love my Wind and the convertible roadster and I'll definatly miss that but.. yea.

What do you guys think? I love the ass on that car, very Aston Martin-like.

I went to take a look at the car, sat in it and its good as new.

I'm quite a fan of the looks of the coupe, and some frugal motoring isn't to be sniffed at.

Is it the model with the 4 wheel steering? I've heard some good things about it (that system designed by RS engineers I believe). Presuming you've driven it, what's it like to drive?

In the end I guess it comes down to what you want. Do you want to stick with the fun, sporty hard top roadster, or do you really want to switch to the economical, spacious, more refined coupe?

I guess because it's from November 2009, makes it 3 years old already.

The previous owners had to sell it in a hurry because they had children and they needed a Scenic to put the baby stuff in.

You think it's dirty buisness? Something is wrong with it?

I've been reading up reviews from all kinds of site & on youtube and they're pretty positive about it. They compare it with A5 and BMW Coupés and they say its a very good car in terms of price and quality compared to the much more expensive German rivals.

Not sure your counting works the same as mine but 3 years?

No this is the Dynamic, without the 4 steering.

It still drives hard on the road, like the Wind but with slightly more comfort.

in November it will be 3 years old, so got another 9 months before that barrier comes up

Okay it's November 09

One year would be November 10
Two years would be November 11
So we're at 2 years and 2 months...

Do people not own clocks, calendars or even fingers to count with?

Lol I did count them but counted 3 rather than not including the first year >.<

So yeah... 2 years and 2 months it is. All agree? :p

So what is the sale price of the Laguna? Personally I'd rather have the Wind. Your wind is a 1.2 turbo right? Would you really gain much in fuel economy?

50% depreciation in a couple of years and 20,000 miles is a bit harsh

But looking at prices for the first coupes, it looks like most of the depreciation has already happened by the 2 year point ;) So it may be a good buy now the major losses are over

Sry, I was at work when I wrote this and this damn phone has stopped calling and I'm a man (last time I checked).. I can't do 2 things at a time

Mileage is about 5.60l (depending on your driving) but I do mostly freeway to go to work etc.

The Wind is 7.6 average and this was with being economical (I never really thrashed it)

everything we buy is an investment to some degree. Many things are financialy a total loss but give us pleasure, enhance our environment or merely keep us alive.

A car could fit into the above, but for most people, the overall costs play a large part so a low milage covered in an uneconomical car may be much better value if thousands of pounds are saved in depreciation against an econimical model that loses value faster.

Okay so it's obvious noone here knows the definition of depreciation

It is actually not the loss in value of an asset.

It is spreading the cost of an asset over its useful economic life.

A car of £100k useful for say 10 years is worth £10k depreciation to its owner per year

Sometimes the value of an asset is less than the carrying amount after this theoretical adjustment resulting in a loss. Or could even be the other way around.

Depreciation does not physically exist as a cost, it is merely an adjustment. And is useless in the real world because a car is worth....
What someone is willing to pay.

No more. No less

I've made a final deciscion. I'm going to keep my funky little Wind.

It's now when I'm young that I can take use of such a cool littel car.. when I'm getting older and maybe start having kids I can't afford a car like this anymore unless I win the lottery but then I'd buy a Pagani Zonda Cinque Roadster.. but its the same principal.

Sorry about all the fuzz.

Nice move as theres not many cars with the looks/style of the Wind, which is rather funky and certainly more of a head turner

Keeping slightly off topic now that Mr Shadow has decided to keep the wind :)

thats my point. look at your budget, find a car, buy it. why worry it's value in 3 years? that Laguna with regular servicing and not thrashing it will do. over 300k in its life. buy a car and enjoy it
In the real world, many people worry about the resale value as that is generaly the deposit on a replacement, therefore getting humped for 1/2th of the depreciation in 1/5th of the life may play a part in how viable a car is to run or making a two year old higher spec model affordable

At 19, your doing very nicely with a Silverstone if you even remotely considered it being completely worthless in 3 years time. However, I presume you expected it to have some residual value, hence the questions above must have played some part.

Doesn't it also depends on what brand?

Take a BMW or an Audi coupe of the same age & same options and I think they keep more of their value.
