Hi.

Does anybody know the true capacity of the petrol tank in a Twingo GT ?
The handbook states 40lt but i'm not sure if this includes the 'Red' area or if that's a 'get to a garage quick' reserve. If it isn't then my mileage per litre figures are a bit naughty... :eek:

Thanks for that LC, that means i should go a bit easier with the loud-clog... but i'm not gonna. :D

there was a thread about this a while ago :) the true capacity is around 42/43 litres. the red PINGGGGGGGGG flasher that indicates no fuel equates to around 5 litres left which comes on at around 34-35 litres. the reason for the extra 'capacity' is down to the fuel filler neck before the air vent, which adds on a slight extra capacity to the tank. luke (LC) is also correct, each of the 7 bars represents around 5 litres and i usually achieve around 9 miles per litre on a gentle drive. if you fill up to the first click, and then go 10 clicks past that you'll witness the 1st of the 7 bars last an age, that's down to the slight extra capacity in the fuel filler neck

remember that the fuel pump is lubricated by the fuel, so for anyone who is constantly running around with 1 bar left or filling up when it gets to the red then you are playing a game of russian roulette which you can't win lol

Cheers for the explanation Oscar. I have to admit, i've since rechecked my figures and i'd miscalculated quite badly, i'm actually getting about 40mpg which i'm quite chuffed with.

Put fuel in , put foot down , petrol is dirt cheap these days anyway :)

I bet Neil can remember when it was less than 50p , I'm 20 and I can remember it being less than a pound

To be honest, i couldn't tell you what the price of petrol is. The last time i paid attention to it was when i could fill a motorbike tank for about a fiver...
As a rule, i put £20 worth in when getting low (saves humping a full tank about) or fill up if i'm going a distance.

And i presume from your prices above LC you are talking litres ? 'fraid i still think in gallons... it's an age thing. :)

It was about 34p per litre when I started driving :p

Have since done a slightly more 'Scientific' test;

From full, doing average daily mileage on A, B and dual-carriaged roads, the first 6 bars on the fuel gauge (bearing in mind warnings that fuel lubricates the fuel pump) took me (1st test) 280 miles. 2nd test took me 288.

Happy with that.

sounds a bit better sandy! it does lubricate the pump, but most importantly it cools it. when the fuel level is flashing on the red, half of the fuel pump is in air getting hot. pumps are always spinning, creating friction and building up heat. basically can burn itself out and once it gets so low that it sucks in air ... no lubrication, bang! and well, 'bang' in a fuel tank isn't too fun i'd imagine...

i know swearing is frowned upon, but i'm sure we can all agree that foook that is a term that'll be thumbed up in this scenario haha

There y'go again, getting all technical on me... :)

Read through one topic on here about 'Spacers'... was on page 5 before i realised it WASN'T about the prolific consumption of amphetamines by Students in the 1970's... :(
