So i was looking around renault sport stuff and i stumbled upon a renault sport brochure online in a PDF file and i discovered a strange safety feature on the Twingo gordini i couldnt make sense out of it what it is, it is called "Integrated passive anti-submarining system"

does someone know what this is , is it something like when your Twingo sinks it floats back to the surface or something :D

anyone have an idea :p

If I remember correctly, the anti submarining systems stop you from sliding downwards and under he seatbelt in the event of a front on accident. It is keeping you from sinking, rather than the car ;)

Edit: it's essentially a seat design feature mostly.

You can find it in the safety section here

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car_seat

What? I've been telling everyone how my car is a submarine :(

My mum and dad have this in the megane 250 its to help stop you falling into the footwell, interesting safety feature, sure it would help though

If you slide into the footwell the likely hood of you feet getting trapped behind the pedals is increased, longer extraction for all services and much more painful!

It is to stop you "submarining" out from under the belt yes...
But it is more to keep you in the seat rather than stopping you from ending up in the footwell.

The idea is to keep the belt in front of your pelvis, meaning something solid is actually there for the belt to restrain. If the belt moved up over your pelvis as you submarine out under it, then there is nothing solid to restrain until it has cut all the way to your spine.

I thought this kind of thing was a mandatory requirement on ALL cars for many years.

Just the marketing people making a "feature" of something they've got to put on...

Its a special airbag that is fitted in the seat right below your knees and it lifts the seat padding up in the event of an accident to lift your knees up preventing ur top leg from slipping down, here is a link to Renaults explanation:

https://www.renault.co.uk/about/safety/airbags.aspx

all mordern cars (depending on ncap rating) have seats that are designed not to trap u etc but renault have done that bit futher so as to get the higgest ncap and seeing as its not a feature on all cars they like to sell it
