Basically I am a sad bastard, looking at a private plate for my Twingo as I didn't keep my last one (was a cheap one). Found a few that relate to the car (RenaultSport, twingo etc.) however my mates are ripping into me for it.

Obviously it's not going to stop me, but does anyone else think that way towards these 'fanboy'' plates?

Depends what it says or is meant to say. I dont mind some of them (but then I am just a girl! What do I know?!?!)

mm, on my other car i also have a private plate. got loads of comments over the years but i keep telling the same;
my private plate is something for myself, if you don't like it turn around and walk away

but yes, you will always get comments and lots of people will think of you as a douche...

(my plate is not related to any brand, just my initials and numbers which mean something to me)

I like private number plates.

The only thing is, the ones relating to the car have to stay with the car or theres a very limited after sale when the car goes.

Car related plates will never give you any sort of return, and any plate that you have to explain the meaning to people is seriously sad. Plates related to your first name can make you a target for muggers and car theft (someone calls your name as you are getting in the car, and while you are wondering where you know them from, they have the chance to approach unguarded)

Pre year letter plates are no longer issued, so they can only appreciate in the long term, so that is the way I would go, if I was buying. It doesn't have to mean anything - it's just individual to you.

There was a chris Harris article on pistonheads last week about private plates.

I like them but in a lot of cases people space them wrong or choose stupid things.

It's not like you're covering the side of the car with a giant Twingo or Renault sticker so tell your mates to do one ;)

I like personal plates as long as they're legal and not stupidly spaced, I have two that match and think they're great, stuff what anyone else thinks mate.

I think private plates work as long as they're obvious. One you can make out the point quite clearly. Like d4ve or something

IMO the ones where you have to have it explained, someone's initials with their date of birth, or a special anniversary or similar, I can't see the point. As we all know they're only trying to hide the age of their car :p

I too like private regs but I'm of the opinion that unless they mean something personal to you, then I don't see the point. What I do think would be sad is one that's a combination of both of these things, for example if I got RS60 DAN or something...

I personally don't see the point on spending money on a private plate when you could spend that money on the car instead

I like private plates. My family have all got personalised plates with our last name on it.

Interesting to see what others think, thanks for replying.

Don't worry, other opinions won't stop me. I'm looking now through DVLA to see what I can get. Having a common name doesn't help haha! I think I'm going to stay away from the brand related one for now.

I personally love personalised plates. I'm currently looking at getting some for my car but what I'm after is proving hard to find and expensive however I do look at it like this I'm always going to have this on my cars so at the end of the day is worth it.
I say go for it, its a plate to put a smile on your face not anyone elses :)

I want a private/personalised plate but my problem is my initials suck.... L.A.G :-( lol

Keep telling myself ill buy one which has been available for years J30 CFW, birth month and day and then initial.

Parents had a car related one X5 TCW they had an X5 and then their initials, when the X5 went it didn't go too well on the other cars but sold it in the end which took a few months to shift.

They dont really interest me, although I would like CL10ZOE :D
They have CL10GEE which I would have got for Charlie as its her last name but noooooo she has too own a 59 plate.....
I have a private one on my bike, first part is a fighter jet and last part is my initials. I like it as it makes the tail end look better with a square plate. On cars though shorter plates don't look right IMO
