Because salt is cheaper than peanuts, so they can weigh in with a cheap ingredient and maximise their profits.

Ignore the crap about taste, preservative and all that - it's purely down to cost. If you can add, say 5% salt, that's 5% LESS nuts you need to put in and a 5% increase in your profits. When you're making millions of bags of nuts, that's a SERIOUS amount of money...
