Avatar sizing?

whats the best way to get a detailed avatar if that makes sense as i seem to keep getting either a blurry pic or i cant upload as filesize too big,

your avatar looks sharp and clear whereas mine looks a little fuzzy,

also cant upload pics on gallery keeps coming up with extension not allowed or something

if you've got photoshop, then resize the image to the required size, and then use save-for-web option to save.
