Youve asked this sort of thing before pritch.

detailing-cleaning-threads/anyone-fancy-machine-polishing-car-will-pay-and-travel-t6671.html

The pics in my posts of the black z4 were done by me.
All in a days work.

If you want to try anyone else who does this for a day job (pro), i can recommend a very good friend of mine (lives a few hundred yards away) has his own detailing business. Very well respected, does ferraris, astons, rollers, bentleys, bmws, you name it.

Has a unit, but will travel to you. Seriously good, fanatical about the finish of a car.

The trims iirc are black anodised aluminium and should come up ok with careful product selection and polishing

Last time i did an X5 i think it had something like 15 microns of anodised coating thickness.

Don't worry yours isn't the only BMW like this, I regularly detail and valet all different colours, models etc. of BMW's and have to say they have some of the worst paint on them out of any over manufacturer I've done, it's very soft and a simple brush past the paint can cause severe swirls and scratches :( althought the deeper scratches won't go a machine polish will sort most of your issues

I understood that BMW paint from experience was hard, and has a ceramiclear type of clearcoat/lacquer.
This should make the surface particularly hard, which if you machine polish you'll realise. (compared to others)

Audi/BMW/Merc/Rolls Royce paints were so notoriuously hard that polish manufacturers developed new formulations to be able to correct these paint surfaces better.

Though the surfaces are still susceptible to scratching from poor wash technique.

I wouldnt describe the BMW paint as "very soft".
Maybe we're talking about different things, or the new specs are wildly different to the old ones.

edit::
just found out that the solid colours are medium, jet black is mega soft and the metallics are hard (but ok to work with).

Must admit I've only done metallics

HTH

The old BMW's I feel are what I understand as hard paint as the techniques of paint manufacture were that solvents were added making it less sucetable to scratches/haze etc. however since the water based paints came in a while back all the new BMW's I've done (mostly black and very dark blue paint) have been very easily scratched, swirled and are more sucetable to stone chips than any over paint from car manufacturers. It's very odd as most of the ones I've detailed are from very carefull owners who are very very fussy

i thought they were generaly hard too.

Just goes to show the importance of treating each car as an individual case and working up the combinations to get results. Imagine wading straight in with some power gloss :(

Paint on cars is so weired, I am now a valeter for Renault and the paint on the same model car, same colour but just a few years older can be so different, I did two black Clios one a 56 plate the other a 58, the paint was in similar condition the odd haze patch and light swirl marks; the 56 plate was so easy to work on and get a good finish however the newer one took me twice as long to get the same results; I even had to go for the deeper cut polishes!
One car I love working on is the modus as the paint on them is so equal and they just come up great with a light non cut polish no matter what the colour

To be hones a lot of those little blemishes would come out with a bit of elbow grease and some regular polish.

You'll find Autoglym Super Resin will fill a lot of the swirls/holograms and even remove some of the scratches. Dodo Juice Lime Prime has a bit more cut to it and would do a good job as well. The only thing detailing won't really touch is the stone chips which are inevitable unfortunately.

This detail generally takes 7-14 days to complete.

I think most of that Cost is Labout cause it takes ages to machine polish and then the products aswell

that Swissvax wax can cost around £150 a tub
products they have said are the top ones on market from what ive seen on DW anyway.

i need mine Machine polished as i have some swirls appearing and a scratch which wont be removed by hand but would by machine. will do it when i get the money together though.

Best thing about living in Scotland is rarely get Sunshine to see the Swirls.

Maybe look at Reviews about price? suppose for the best job avaliable you do need to pay. nothing is cheap these days.

its annoying because its a toss up between getting the car done or a holiday

What ever you need more tbh. if you feel you need a break then take one. probly feel better after one.

saying that depends how badly you want your car looking amazing.

suppose its only worth doing if you plan to keep the car a good while

Have you mailed Jim @ White Details?
Worth a try, I'm sure he'd do as good if not a better job, and save you £300 or so in the process.

£695 is a lot of cash to spend on a detail.
Now if you had an Aston, or a Ferrari it would be different.

Where are you based Rob?
