How to start up with a cold engine

I remember a guy who gave his F7R Williams engine death from cold as he reconed it would make it bed in quicker and it was one of the quickest about.

you don't get full oil temperature I find until about 15-20 minutes of normal driving so I usually give it that before giving it a proper hard drive but 10 minutes before I start pushing it reasonably hard

I owned a Kia Picanto before this car and I ALWAYS ragged it from cold and it never let me down... and that car was poorly built to say the least.

Haha +1 I did exactly the same with my Picanto lol. I did that from when yhe car was brand new too and it's still going strong 3 years later, the g/f has it now and its never skipped a beat.

Ths is on about warming up engines, not hamster wheels

your best bet is to just rag the sh*t out of it and drive it like you stole it then the week before your warranty runs out stick some sugar or valve grinding paste in the oil and get a new engine

then as soon as you get your new engine strip it down and reduce the oil galleries size in the block but increase them slightly in the head.
de-bur and then high polish every single inner face on the engine internals.
whack a set of arp bearings in there for good measure and away you go, making sure you run in properly and then drive gentley for the first 10 mins before leaning on the right pedal

*or you could always consider a dry sump system but either way dont forget oil changes every 2000miles

im sure it will be fine mate i reckon there are millions of engines out there that have been abused and are still goin strong(ish)
and just think if it does go bang which it wont its the perfect excuse for a rebuilt

just to make you feel alot better ........how many rs's do you think are driven gently and carefully at the factory, on and off transporters, at the pdi centres and the dealers/demo's road tests etc and thats all within the first 20miles of their lives

Valid point

Now that you mention it, when I dropped my car at the garage for maintenance I remembered how much fuel was in it.

When I came to pick it up again it had done several kilometers on the clock and some amount of fuel was gone.. wonder what they did at the garage :?

I had mine checked this morning; nothing to worry about!! The mechanic didn't drive it, but started it and opened the hood.

How would he check it?

Other than if something obvious was missing that won't really help. And won't give you any financial help if it does snap.

If you're worried, change the oil and send a sample off to a company to analyse. There's plenty about. And they'll be able to tell you the metal content of the oil etc.

at least youve got something to ask for for xmas now.....

Haha that is not a bad idea at all! That could always come in handy ;)

when my 200 got a brand new engine I let it warm up for 10 minutes then gave it 7800rpm gear changes all day and every day after that, with 1000 miles on it it ran 203bhp on the rollers, strongest 200 ive driven

I always start with the clutch depressed as its make it easier on the engine to start. Even with the car in neutral the engines starter motor still has to crank the engine and the gearbox. This on top of waiting till warm before raising the revs.

The two items could be warranty items, or at least renault contributions.

Renault UK have been good at honoring warranty repairs on the front wishbones where the rubber boot has split. Even, offering a goodwill contribution to older cars just out of warranty. Theres a thread in the suspension section with several pics and countless members that have had replacements. Maybe worth speaking to your country reps or Renault directly and point them in the direction of RUK ;)
