It took a few tries to force the update to work for me. Seems online there's a relatively common "cannot restore" error.

It's worth it though, some of the v5 updates are very good

yeh i cant get mine to update keeps coming up with that error damn thing oh well ill just wait till my 4S arrives.

Have read a few things that say its due to apple's verification servers being hammered, and that it's kind of luck of the draw if it works for you. Bit naff, but at least it's not a problem with the download/your device etc

iOS 5 is good. Not going to bother installing the complete version on my 3GS as it doesn't completely work! So long to update I'm not going to have chance to do it before I go and collect my shiny new one at 7.30 tomorrow morning

Had a play around with the beta a few weeks back and it was awesome then, awesome now.

Not downloading it through iTunes though as there are too many people trying and causing problems... Got a direct download running now and I'll update the phone with it tonight.

Took me 15 minutes to download and 5 for iTunes to sort itself out. Then good to go. Did I just get lucky?! Loads of people saying it takes ages...

Ok, I've bitten the bullet and downloaded iOS5. It took 10 minutes to download, which seems quite fast so i presume most people have done theres now anyway. Its just installing. Not sure how it will go but we will see...!

I think there's less toll on the servers today, so it's more likely you'll get through.
