I would say for track car you want to spend no more than £1000 and then maybe £4000 Track prepping it etc.

£5000 is a very long way away from a cheap track toy in my book
your not far off a brit car for that!, i think iv done whole seasons for less

standard 172 cup stripped out off ebay = £1000ish max
dont tune it at all, u will ruin it they are best left alone (plus means still useable if u had to)
bucket seat+harness+15inch wheels done.

mx5 would b my rwd choice but u will soon b wanting more power and suspension

if you like classics get a r5 gtt easily tunable to 180 and once stripped will more than hold its own against most! but will prob take abit more loving than a clio/mx5 and becareful of the dreaded rust

off roading = old disco £500ish + lift kit £150ish +tyres £200ish and your done!!
plus greenlaning is free ;)

think you should go along to a offroad place/day before u buy one tho see what u think.
i no a guy in bedford with a disco for sale if u wana see it or il pm u pics of mine

I find though when on track you want the best suspension you can buy. I would say the confidence it gives is worth 100bhp lol

Westfield price then :? Reasonable spec, 500Kg and 130hp upwards.

Cateringvans have heritage so prices are higher.

Mk 2 or 3 Golf gti.not a mk4 as the geometry is rubbish and gets worse when dropped. Fresh damper, pads and some decent rubber

Would love a caterham for track fun but way too much cash. This westfield has been considered in my mind.

I still think a 106 varient would be a smart choice. That or get a high miles AMG or something or a V8 Jag lol

Not many of those around at trackdays

Puma is also not a bad idea. We have run one as a road rally car for years and never had any issues.

Been looking at saxos the vts is the "speedier" one isn't it?
Seen a few for about £700 and there is looooooaads of parts for them isn't there!

saxo's and 106's are both good choices and track orientated parts are 10 a penny for these.. not too expensive to buy and very tuneable

the vts is 16v and so faster than the 8v vtr

Ooooh I'm still torn but I think I'm gonna spending the money on the twingo instead I've already decided on a supersprint catback and and some spax springs next month haha I'll still get a project in the future about September time I think

I'm under the impression that the main advantage of coilovers is that you can lower them more and adjust them as and when you feel? but I don't really want to do that, 25/30 is fine by me and springs are way cheaper

You can adjust height yes and a whole lot more. The damper stiffness etc etc

Set of well setup coilies will make the car handle like something else!

Exhaust will just make you loud lol

depends if you buy a decent exhaust or not!
same goes for coilovers most just make your car horrible on normal roads!
for a decent set of coilovers your prob looking at least a few grand :?

if your looking for a cheap form of motorsport u should look at solo events/sprints,they are mega mega cheap and u can use pretty much any vehicle u want, then once you get the hang of them and your car do your msa/ARDS licences then get hillclimbing or rallycross.

Solo sprints sound fun! Maybe a forum event :p

they are a good laugh and u could pretty much pull up along side anything from a mk1 escort to an old f1 car
prob the cheapest way to go motorsporting, 172/182s normally do very well ;)

that does look good, it seems like a good way for a beginner to get into motorsport because you're not gonna take out everyone with you if you screw up haha
