Yeah the 172 and especially 182s were extremely popular cars. I think it's because they offered so much performance for not a lot of money.

I paid less for my 172 new than I did for my Gordini and got just as many features. The RenaultSport Meganes on the other hand are very rare, especially the Phase I versions.

I'm afraid so, been driving 10 years now and had 8 Renaults in that time. Got my Clio 172 back in 2003 and loved it. If I had the chance to get another 172 or 182 I definitely would.

172 and 182 are cheap for what they are now only problem they all have loads of miles one them

As long as they're looked after they're fine and the amount of power/litres you get for the money is great.

Mine had 107k on the clock when I wrote it off, no previous problems at all! Nicks is around there, ragged around a track all the time and still ticking over :)

Daft thing is that as much as many ignorant people refer to 'It's French' as some kind of dig at their reliability and build quality, the RenaultSport engines are actually pretty damned sturdy.

Have seen numerous 172s with over 100k on the clock, most fast MKI Clios like the 16v or Williams have over 100k on the clock as well. My 172 was faultless all be it had only done 15k when I sold it.

To get a 172, cheap as a runabout or track car I'd gladly buy a higher mileage example.

RS are cracking they go on and on thats why when people go on about how bad they are i tell them to get on before commenting

That's always what I say to people.

I've had a lot of stick from people because I like Renaults. Yet whenever people have been in the cars I've had they've been impressed. My thinking is that a Renault will respond to how you treat it. Yes, if you use and abuse one, they're not as hard wearing as a VW or Honda but if you look after one and enjoy, you've got a reliable great car.

Let's face it though, you won't find many cars that will out handle a RenaultSport or offer much better performance for the money.

Also, out of the 8 cars I've had, 7 of which were Renaults, the VW Lupo was the least reliable!!!

all my 5's are bombproof and all i ever hear is "oo i wouldnt have one of those they overheat"!!
iv done 20+ runs at pod in a day without any probs!!

my 172 had 138 on the clock and it never missed a beat!it drove to the ring and back and it had a week of hard driving when there two years running without a problem

renaultsports are just as strong as anything out there if not stronger!!
they just need to be treated propery where as u can abuse some cars and get away with it!!

Turbo, what Renault 5s have you got mate.

I'm a massive fan of them and intend on having one at some point. Had a R5 Campus 1.4 and even that was great fun.
