Ok so this morning has cost me £500
And they have quoted me £371 for new brake pads for the rear!?!

Surely I can get them cheaper?!?

How can you need pads, if the light isn't on?

If you challenge them, they will back down, and say that they will be needed before the next service, so that is why the recommend change.

Never thought of it like that.....

Surely you would have known how overly expensive these cars are to look after. It's a BMW so you pay 65% over the normal price.

You youngsters never do. You're only interested in finding another mirror to look in. ;)

Pad fitting is not difficult, but as it's a critical component, I'd let someone else fit them if you're not confident of doing it correctly.

I guess that they are also wanting to change the discs, for that price. I would ask them what the disc thickness is, and what the manufacturers tolerance is.

Main dealers have been pulling the "you need discs and therefore you also need pads" one for a few years now. The job books at 90 minutes per axle, yet you can do an axle on the floor in 20 minutes, and could probably do the whole car in 30 minutes on a 2 post lift.

Porsche (the manufacturer) changed their service limits from 3mm to 2mm on the discs, yet the discs weren't any different. They may have had the odd one crack, but it meant that everyone else lost 30% of disc life for what could have been manufacturing defects, or abuse.

I've just looked, and rear Textar discs (which I think BMW use) are £33.54 each from Euo Car Parts, and a set of ATE pads are £57 (which I also think are the OEM). That would be just over £124 for the parts, and bend over for the labour.

Are you actually shitting me?!?

Can anyone order from euro car parts? Or just trade?

If anyone I will be buying myself and getting and independent garage to fit.
Thank you sooo much for your help mate I really appreciate it

You can order online for free delivery or collection or even go in and get them over the counter.

If you order online there is always discounts too. At the moment it's 25% of parts ;)

Just because they say they're low doesn't mean they need changing. If they need changing then you'll be told at MOT not at a service... That's just a dealer wanting more money.

Very interesting Matt as they did my MOT 3 weeks ago and passed it with no advisories....

Anyone can use ECP.

I used my wife's old reg number from her 120d to get the part numbers. You could ring the BMW parts dept, and see how much the parts are for genuine BMW. I still don't reckon it should be much more than £160

The problem is that main dealers see a car, and assume that if the driver can afford the car, then they can afford the main dealer inflated parts and fitting prices.

Find a good independent dealer near you, and use them. I'm sure there's plenty recommended on places like BMWland.

If the pads are low they should have advised them on the mot.. Haven't you got the new dash that tells you how many miles are roughly left in the pad?

It's not hard to check them Rob. You've changed pads on a car before too

The trip comp says they have 8000 left.

I did James yes but on the Twingo which doesn't have sensors like the BMW does

Well then they need to either explain the pads or fix the sensor... Warranty possibly?

Rob,

THE VOICE OF EXPERIENCE SPEAKS: (turned 50 last weekend)

When you take a car into a garage for a specific job, and they then say to you "The pads and discs need changing", your answer is "Thank you for letting me know".

If they press it further, your answer is "I'll think about it".

End of discussion. Hard-earned still in pocket.
