Okay so before I went ahead and put the deposit down on my Twingo I did a few checks on some insurance websites. I found that I could insure the Twingo rs for a pretty reasonable £565. At the time I had decided that I did not want the cup package but when I got to the dealers and decided I did indeed want it, I was confused about the insurance. Thinking that the added cup chassis with the lowered suspension and bigger wheels would require a different insurance policy I quickly checked on the dealers computer for a quote but I found no option for the cup chassis. The dealer did mention to me that if I did not inform the insurance company that my car had a cup chassis and then I wrote it off, it would likely be replaced with a standard RS. I phoned an insurance company just to check what was required and was told I would need to include the cup chassis as a modification. The lady of the phone then did this for me and gave me a quote of £695... £130 more than originally!
I just wanted to check if any of you cup chassis owners have had the same situation. Even better I would like to know if anybody has insured an RS without including the cup chassis as a modification and crashed it, and what then happened? I don't really want to pay the extra money if I don't actually have to.

It's not a modification though it's an optional extra. Try and find out if putting it in as an option extra changes the quote.

That's exactly why I thought it was stupid. I tried several insurance companies, there is no option for the cup package online and when I phone them they add it as a modification. I think they're just trying to do me for as much money as they can but I need to be sure.

was your quote with admiral by any chance?

if you do, all the optional extras you declare increase your insurance.

With admiral they let me do any 'external decorative modification' that won't increase my premium (which was ~£450) which covers the wrap I want to do.

Mines an actual cup though, I did a quote with them when I was looking and getting different quotes for full fat with cup dkdnt seem to make a problem. Them welsh birds are usually quite helpful (on the sales side at least)

wish that was the same for me :( my insurance went up by nearly 200 quid after i declared everything and that was before the mods started

So i'm a bit confused, do you think I should declare the cup chassis as a modification and pay the extra 130?

NO. because its not a modification.

its only a mod if you have done it yourself, (such as putting different suspension on it to lower it)

as it is a renault option when buying its is still a twingo rs just with options not a modification

Weird that they would charge you more for a Twingo RS CUP which is actually a semi-stripped version with less options :?

Okay thanks for all help, good to know I will have an extra 130 to spend this christmas :D

+ 2 an also MissDW is my insurance advisor so she's normally right ;)
 Im fairly confident on this one, but dont hold me to it, I dont want to get you into trouble if Im wrong!

Despite it not being a modification as such, I'd have thought having it over a standard FF 133 would still make a difference to premiums?!

I can't really compare, I didn't get a quote on a FF or a Cup, just the FF+Cup I bought...

I would be inclined the check. The Clio 182 for example was a group 16 on the old insurance groups and the Cup was a 17!

Admittedly there's less difference between a Cup and non-Cup 133 but if the insurance companies has an excuse not to pay out they will. I'd inform them even if it doesn't make a difference.

It can't be a modification if it came out of the factory that way...

...besides, if there was ANY common sense in the insurance industry it'd actually be cheaper to insure a Cup, because same power + better handling = less probability of an accident, right? :)

Or possibly someone testing their Cup chassis out to the max and crashing it? ;)

As you say though it's not a modification and wouldn't be deemed as one but may be insured as a different model because of it. That's a maybe as chances are they come in at exactly the same price.
