4 years on ive now Passed the Skills Test (end of Apprenticeship test that you have to sit to show that you are good standard at the job). i find myself without a secure job as employer just hasent got enough work to keep me going aswell as himself and dont have a clue what do do now. Struggling to see any jobs id be good at.

Often the case I'm afraid. Now that you're qualified, you need more money, but your employer can't afford you.

Start up on your own. Get some flyers printed, and shove them through doors. "No job too small." Once you get a couple of jobs under your belt, word of mouth will bring in more work (as long as you are good). Go for it. What do you have to lose?

I've combined apprenticeship and Uni I left school and done a 4 year electrical apprenticeship (engineering not domestic ) and I ha to like others on here do my apprenticeship framework but on top ive done my hnc then topped up to foundation degree/hnd and this year starting is my final year at Uni for degree :) good mix of both is best option in engineering I think if you want to progress more

The problem i have about doing work on my own is there is far to much competition around like there are about 9 different Painters in the town where i stay and the range of work isnt big enough so alot of them are struggling.

so im looking at taking a new turn in direction away from it as i need regular income to move out of parents house which is what i ideally want to do. current job just inst offering it.

Shame then that you can't do what you want to do. Maybe once you move out, you'll be in another area, where there's more oportunities.

I know that it's a long shot, but does anyone lse listen to R4? There was a good programme on at lunchtime about the subject of going to university. 40% drop out before graduation.

The best advice at the end was "Don't go to university because you think you must or because you have nothing else to do. Decide what career you want to do, and if that calls for a degree, then do one. If it doesn't, then go straight into your chosen career."
