Need a copy for my new build. My plan to get a student copy has gone out the window with 8 being just around the corner it's not available.

Need a 64-bit version of 7, not sure I'm fussed which version though.
Not looking at 8, not sure i like it!

What's the most cost effective option to me?

Took me 3 lines to understand you were talking about computer stuff, I thought you were gonna ask about lexan windows for an RS lol

Are you at/affiliated to an organisation (or know anyone who is) which is signed up to Microsoft Dreamspark? That would be your cheapest way.

Would that be an oem/builders copy. I can get one through work, BUT the IT guy is quite quiet at the moment and is also useless.

Microsoft Dreamspark is essentially M$ giving away software to people at learning institutions (though there are some others involved I think). It's similar from an institution perspective to having an open license agreement with M$

Ah ok then no I'm not. We subcontract the IT at work to someone who used to be employed by the firm. He works on the basis of when he can be arsed or needs some money/ a break from WOW
He can get me an copy but relying on him for the above reasons is a bit of a problem. Although it is handy in that he usually forgets to invoice

Not really after an illegal copy. Would rather it all be straight.

Might even wait for 8, although I did play on it and didn't like it, but have since been told the lack of a start button was my fault? Summin to do with tablet versions or some crap. Either way, my cousin is one of them developer geeks (well technically a business geek) and usually makes little or no sense to me  I also tried him for a copy but he's useless

Unless they've backtracked in the last month, there is no start button, just the "Metro" UI in its place (which is the main tablet interface).

Yeah that's what I saw and tried and didn't like!

But I was informed afterwards that there can be depending on the mode you're using. But as I said, I didn't play with that and tbh don't really care that much about it. Off for a 64 bit copy of 7 and keep my start button. Just to time it so I don't pay far too much if I can

And I have my 7. I will think about 'upgrading' to 8 in the future, once I know if I actually like it or not.

8 is a POS in my opinion. Trying to be something it's not.

Will stick to trusty old XP, OS X or Ubuntu (plus other flavours).

Is this like Vista all over again... Mass beta testing on the public :?

8 is just the new vista, a stop gap while the new one is worked on. It's not as bad as people make out, but ye, it's not great. Some features are ok but some things just don't help itself. Can't wait to try it on a tablet though, I reckon on the new ms tablet (which has great potential) it could be a great OS

I have a Microsoft technet subscription, I MIGHT be able to get you something sorted. Free isos and cd keys ftw!

8 is good, and with the way applications are delivered, and being seamless across all [compatible] devices, I can see it being picked up by a lot of people. I already know enterprise customers are looking into it ;)

Well I've already gone 7 now. Glad to be back online on something other than my phone.

I'd choose 7 over 8 any day, I'm old fashioned.

this is like my its only in the last 12 months ive given up XP and moved over to 7, should have done it sooner tbh as its good! however having played with 8 as much as i want to like it im too set in my ways with the start menu

Installed 8 on my home machine recently, so much quicker than 7 and it's so easy to get used to. Will be upgrading my work laptop to 8 in the new year
