The bits like processor and ram, the iPad mini is the same as the iPad 2, but it has upgraded cameras, Bluetooth version and lightning port.

Don't forget that the iPad 2 is quite old in itself, as the iPad with retina display is really the iPad 4. Since this release Apple appear to have tried to forget " the new iPad" which was the 3rd generation and had an A5X chip existed.

If you have a look at the comparison page you'll see more of a breakdown.

iPad Mini and 2 both run the A5 chip, the new iPad is an A6X, the Mini/2 has 512gb of RAM where as the 3 has 1gb. Thing is the iPad 2/Mini's A5 chip was then replaced in the iPad 3 with an A5X and now in the 4th gen the A6X which is in the iPhone 5. The chip in the Mini is effectively two generations old and that puts me right off. :(

I always thought the 'New iPad with Retina Display' was a bit of a strange one for Apple, it just seemed like they needed to get a new iPad out with the lightning connector. So made a couple of minor changes to the 3 (ie new chip) and made out it was all new. It came out only 6 months after the 3rd gen model.

Hmm, so what kind of differences will the 'older' ram processor and chip spec have, would i still be able to play high quality games flawlessly and stuff like that? Ide only get it on wifi, so the internet speed is only as good as my **** provider anyway haha

In the flesh the mini just doesn't make you go 'wow'

The nexus does that before you've seen the price difference IMO. Just go into a shop and try them all for yourself as its a lot of personal preference.

It should probably be OK, but will probably start to seem more laggy more quickly than new products should.

A real consideration for me would be that Apple only tend to support the most recent two hardware specifications with all the latest software features in updates. It will be interesting to see how they play this with the mini, as it's already kind of on the boarder with this hardware-wise

You would certainly be able to play everything on it at a fair rate, don't get me wrong the iPad 2 does pretty much everything well, my Mrs has one. You can play all the decent tablet games well as well as web surfing and all that jazz. What you will find though is the higher spec games will start to not be compatible much like some games not even installing on an iPhone 4 but fine on a 4S/5.

I would imagine though that they will continue to support IOS for longer on the iPad Mini/2 or receive some seriously bad press for releasing a 'new' iPad in the Mini and then it being totally out of date within 12 months!

I suppose I personally would just want something that wasn't just a small version of an old product for the money. It's more about the principle for me as I don't doubt it works brilliantly like any other Apple product.

The way I looked at it with the 7" tablets is that you ideally want them for taking with you so you'd ideally want as much storage as possible, so ideally 32gb. That means that the iPad Mini is over £300 and the Nexus was £200, plus the Nexus has a 1.3ghz quad core and the iPad Mini I believe has a 1ghz processor the same as the iPhone 4S. It was a no brainer for me on the 7" choice where as for a large tablet I wouldn't hesitate at the latest iPads. :)

I agree with Maggie the Nexus does make you go wow because it's only £200!! A full sized iPad with retina display makes you go wow but it ain't cheap. The Mini is a bit uninspiring sadly.

Remove the price tags and compare back to back though Alex... And the Asus is still gonna make you think wow before the mini IMO

Well certainly in terms of tech spec, if you're prepared to look into it that far.

To be fair, I had no idea on the spec before I bought the Asus. I have a full size iPad but fancied something smaller for taking on the train so it was the price that swung it for me most and having seen one of the guys with one at work too.

Then when you read up further you can see how impressive it is. Even the screen is a high resolution.

Don't get me wrong I love my Apple products and I love IOS, still prefer it to Android to be fair but with the Mini, if I can get a device that's £150 cheaper and a better spec for something I'm going to chuck in my work bag I'd go for the Nexus.

Double twist and air sync are must haves if you wanna use your iTunes. My god that's well done. Just set carrie up with all the music she wants. Perfect and easy

There's plenty of compatibility stuff available for the Nexus tablets, I've got an app that allows me to stream to my Apple TV from my Nexus 7.

Also, I recommend Desktop VisualizeR as it allows you to create your own application shortcuts with any images you like.

You can then make your list of games for example look like this rather than just icons. I've not quite mastered it yet as only downloaded it yesterday but worth a go for a bit of customising.

Basically if you download the VisualizeR software first, then have a look in your widgets list you'll see you have a load of options for various sized icons.

Press and hold them so you can drag them into place and it will give you a tile in the size you went for such as 2x4 or 3x2 etc. When you press it, it then gives you the option to pick and image and associate it with an action such as opening an application.

Those images for Angry Birds I just found on Google.

Since that screenshot I've downloaded the add-on that allows you to crop the images so they are all the same size. Makes them far more neat. :)

Ah I see. I did exactly that but hadn't found any images. I'm sure carrie won't even notice so it can wait

Is this the same for Samsung S phones? Thinking of going Android (Samsung S whatever in a years time) if there no discernible changes to IOS by then.

I really like having everything in iTunes and just syncing. It's so easy.

That will certainly explain it haha. Do a bit of Googling to find some relevant images then use them from your gallery.

Alternatively you can use the app icons themselves and increase their size so they're a bit more easy on the eye. :D

Did a bit more playing about with the cropping tool so I can get the icons a more generic size...

TBH alex i didn't get a chance. Couldn't get the thing off carrie!

And N0ddie, it will allow you to, however, if you purchased itunes music prior to 2009 it will need to be updated if you haven't already done so for the DRM licences.
