Hi all, I've got an 07 twingo gt with a noisy gearbox. To describe the noise it's like a dodgy bearing noise which changes with pitch when under load or coasting in gear the noise disappears when the clutch is pressed to change gear. Not present when In neutral either. Clutch has fairly high bite point and the cars got 102,000 and does mostly motorway miles if this helps.

What's people's thoughts new box required or is the problem less sinister? Any replies appreciated.

Just to add changed gearbox oil which made no difference. Cheers eddie
 
Clutch bearing by the sound of it, New clutch would be the needed, or trade it in :D
 
yeah sounds like the thrust bearing, it will make a grinding noise when engaged. time for a new clutch kit eddie! that'll be a good 10 hours in labour + 150 for the clutch kit, not too bad i suppose. basically what's happened is the thrust bearing is made of pressed steel, 102k miles later it has gone through the pressure plate.

the noise will only be present as the pressure plate and clutch plate is engaged onto the flywheel, thus turning as a whole unit. when in neutral, the noise would vannish for the obvious reason of being in neutral. this is quite common on high mileage cars, your twingo will no doubt be on the factory clutch so that's a bloody good life it's had!
 
Cheers for the replies and knowledge just got to weigh up if it's worth the cost? the cars probably only worth a little over a grand. Is it a case of removing the left hand suspension/drive shaft and wiggling the box out of the way to get to the clutch or is there a better way? Not sure if it's something I could do on my drive tbh. Any rough ideas on the amount of miles I'll get before it disintegrates?
 
no it's not as simple as that, subframe needs to be dropped and the engine mount removed with the engine supported from the top and then it's a driveshafts out job. this is how we done it at renault, it's the quickest way to gain the best access to properly align the clutch

as said eddie, it's going to be 7.5 (apologies, it's 10 for the RS model) hours labour but you will be able to get a good deal at local garages. in my oppinion that's definitely worth it. these little D4FT TCE engines will soldier on high into the 200,000 miles zone like a diesel does. they are sturdy little engines, and your cars worth around 2.5 grand easily!
 
also, i'd say that considering a trade in would be a hugely false economy...calculating cost against value, is wrong in so many ways!

you could trade it in for another car, and then 5 miles later it's going to require a whole new gearbox and that will be more than quadruple the price of the simple clutch job in the little twingo. owning any car comes with repair costs, and you probably don't realise that as a whole these twingos are the most reliable little cars on the road outside your usual jap manufacturers and the one time exception of the ford focus :) there have been one or two horror stories, and i literally mean one or two!

TRANSMISSION REMOVAL

* Remove transmission from underneath the vehicle, ensure that the steering remains centralised and ensure the LH drive shaft roller bearing remains intact inside transmission
* Components to be removed include :
Battery and battery tray.
Engine Control Module (ECU)
Driveshafts
Torque Reaction Link (dog bone engine / transmission mount)
Radiator lower crossmember. Secure radiator to bonnet slam panel.
Front subframe complete with steering rack, suspension lower arms and anti-roll bar.
 
Your probably right in the 40,000 miles I've done in it I've only replaced a coil pack discs and pads so I'm probably over due spending some money. I'd love to have a bash at it but that seems beyond what I could achieve in a weekend. Looks like I'll have to get some quotes Monday :(. Thanks again for the knowledge

That's bit over the top did my RS in and out in less than 5 hours

7 or so hours book time, but realistically you can bash through it in 3-4 hours. 10 hours book time for the 133
 
Mines was independent garage was around 9-10 hours labour. Took a week for the clutch to come from France, then renualt made them return the original??
 
i'd say so rob, if you change your oil every 5-8,000 miles (9 months) and use the best oil possible, the k4m is known to be a reliable old girl in her later years. there are plenty of scenics on 150k miles which still have reasonable compression over the cylinders which shows the piston rings aren't duds just yet :) plus if you're confident. you could strip the engine down yourself to replace the piston rings which would cost you 70-100 quid and then do the timing yourself with the correct tools. it's pretty easy on the k4m. once you've sussed it out, you'd be raging that you'd spent 5-700 for the timing to be done lol
 
It's gone in to my local garage this morning they've quoted 9hrs plus parts at £697 that's including the slave cylinder. To say I'm gutted is an understatement. Let's hope it soldier's on to 200k because that's how long I'll be keeping it now.
 
9 hours? renault book time is 6 hours, auto data book time is a conservative 7.5 hours. i think that price is absolute extortion mate. i'm assuming they're charging 45 quid labour for the 9 hours then 100 in vat on top of that?

His words where along the lines of I'll over quote should be cheaper than that. Maybe I'll give them a call and explain that a friend in the trade has described the quote as extortionate. He said the clutch kit was 167? Including slave didn't ask if that was inclusive of vat. The quote is with vat.
