My last car was a BMW 118d sport, on the motorway great on fuel. At a steady 70 mph you can get 60 miles per gallon, driving like a nun though. Round town expect around 45 mpg.
As car as diesels are concerned BMW diesel are much more refined than vag diesels.
And knowing what I know now I'd have gone for a 120d m sport coupe.
A 118d convertible will be slow and the extra weight will loose a few mpg.

go for a beemer all the way! they are lovely comfortable cars + Rear wheel drive which I think is a Big plus
And there will be a new 1series by the end of the year. Not a new coupe though..

My wife had a 116se at the same time I had a e46 based 325ti. Was about a year after they came out and the build quality was not a patch on old e46. Creaky and poor plastics everywhere, not Renault bad but still not great. Hopefully things have changed. But saying that a guy I worked with had a 123d coupe, awesome engine, he got shot due to the interior rattles, that was a 57/08 ish plate if I remember right.

For me, I'd personally go for either of the VW models you've mentioned.

I've always found with the Audi/BMW models, you just pay a premium for the badge. The A3 is a nice car but is basically a Golf, the TT and Mini are both rather girly. The 1 series is ok as a Coupe and the 3 series isn't a bad looking motor but you'd want a 123 or 323 upwards.

I'd rather have a top end Ford/Renault/Vauxhaul etc than a poverty spec Audi/BMW/Mercedes etc if that makes sense.

If it were me, out of that list I'd be strongly considering the Scirocco, as it has the most character, is the most interesting looking and is a far more interesting car overall.

How about a high spec version of the megane (coupe) gt diesel. That could be pretty sweet

Don't like meganes im afraid ! :(

At the moment my mind is made up.. in a years time i hope to be in a bmw 1 series M sport convertible 120d

The 20d engine is much nicer than the 18d due to the injectors, also the 118d has the most extreme tall gearing I've ever come across. 80 mph is just over 2k rpm which made very lazy motorway driving.
Oh and when you get bored have it re mapped to over 200 hp.

Also, it's gotta be the 1 series coupe. The back of a 1 series hatch just looks like they gave up! lol

There is something about contrasting interiors that is quite cool.

A friend of mine had an E46 M3 convertible in deep metallic blue with a read leather interior. Looked awesome with the roof down.

there will be a new hatckback in a few months time, from what I've seen it's quite an improvement!
