Factoid

The international space station is travelling at nearly 18,000 miles per hour. That's approximately 5 miles a second. And though it appears as though there is no gravity on the space station, the earth's gravitational pull is only ~12% weaker than it is on the earth's surface. (given the altitude of ~250 miles) It's just that the ISS and all its contents (including the astronauts ) are all falling towards the earth at the same rate (with the sideways speed always ensuring it will not fall into an impact with the earth). This gives the 'illusion' of weightlessness and as such, microgravity.
